I am an experienced teacher, and have taught English, Music, and ESL in New York City, Italy, and Thailand to students of all ages. I also have extensive test prep experience, working for The Princeton Review and tutoring independently. I have prepared students for the SAT (all sections), SAT-II Writing, SSAT/ISEE (all sections), AP English Literature, AP English Language, MTEL (Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure), and New York Regents Exams--English, U.S. History, Global History. Most recently, I have taught English enrichment classes at the Harlem Educational Activities Fund (HEAF). I hold a B.A. in Psychology from Pomona College, an M.A.T. in English Education from Boston University, an M.A. in English from Middlebury College's Bread Loaf School of English, and an M.Ed. in Arts in Education from Harvard University, where I was a recipient of an Urban Scholars Fellowship. I have a love of learning and a love of teaching, and will bring my enthusiasm for the subject matter, along with my enthusiasm for helping people learn, to each session.
I have been involved in the world of music and music education, since I was a child starting violin lessons at the age of 5 and piano lessons at the age of 8. I studied violin with Fudeko Takahashi and piano with Clara Slater at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School and also participated in their choirs and orchestras and chamber music ensembles. At NEC, I also studied Music Theory, Music History, and Ear Training. I also played violin with what was then known as GBSYO (Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras), and is now known as BYSO, and attended Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music during the summers. At Pomona College, I studied violin and voice, took classes in Music History and the History of Jazz, was Principal Second Violin of the Pomona College Orchestra, and sang in the Pomona College Choir, the Pomona College Glee Club, and the Pomona College Women's Blue and White. I also hold an M.Ed. in Arts in Education from Harvard University.
Since college, I have participated in various large and small ensembles, both formal and informal. In San Diego, I sang with the La Jolla Symphony Chorus and helped to found Mosaic, an all-women's a cappella group. In New York, I sang with the Bella Voce Singers and currently sing with the Choral Society at Grace Church. I also have played for the last several years with members of the Bronx Symphony Orchestra in the holiday concerts held at the Bronx Library Center.
At the Harvard Graduate School of Education, I sang with the Radcliffe Choral Society, and with the Harmonicas, a newly-founded a cappella group, at the 2010 Commencement ceremony. I also helped organize a database for chamber musicians to find other musicians to have informal sight-reading sessions. At the Bread Loaf School of English, where I earned an M.A. in English, I co-orchestrated/performed a Spoken Word Opera with a spoken word poet, performed on violin and as a singer at various graduation ceremonies, and performed as a violinist in a bluegrass band.
I have worked with students at a variety of age and ability levels. I taught General Music to Elementary and Middle School students at the International School of Trieste, working with students from grade 1 through grade 8. With the Elementary School students, I taught students songs, worked with student instrumentalists, and put together four concerts, two each semester. With the Middle School students, class consisted of me organizing two whole-class songs per grade, and supporting small student performance groups as they chose, learned, and choreographed songs, at times adding instrumentation. I organized three Middle School concerts over the course of the year. In addition, I ran a small after-school choir and organized an end of the year talent show.
Also, at the High School for Violin and Dance in the Bronx, stepping outside my role as an English teacher, I helped out with the violin program, and team-taught tenth grade violin.
Outside of the formal school environment, I have worked at Tenacre Day Camp as a Music Activity Head. My duties involved creating fun musical activities for and teaching songs to kids from age 5 through age 13.
