Hello, students!

Let me help you navigate to language success! Much of English is related to Latin-based languages such as French and Spanish. I can help you utilize what you already know in your language to make foreign language learning easier.

While the Internet offers many resources, nothing replaces one-on-one sessions with a teacher dedicated to clarifying the cloudy places in a foreign language. I am a certified, experienced tutor and teacher of French, Spanish and ESL, finding success with children as well as adults at all learning levels. Whether you need to polish your pronunciation, conversation, listening comprehension, grammar, writing, memory techniques or all of the preceding, lessons are designed for your needs. I have helped design, administer and grade the FLACS middle school and high school examinations that students must pass in NYS public schools, and I know what students need to know in order to pass them. Adults can polish their French business skills based on conversation and exercises around French business conventions and terminology, or sharpen their grammar for better reading comprehension. It's up to you.

For your information, the seafarer's cry of "MayDay!", the "Emergency! Help me right now!" signal used by boaters everywhere is originally from the French: "M'aidez!" = Help me!

Let me be your life raft to language learning! I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Lisa D.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am an American-born, NYS certified French and Spanish teacher with a Master's degree in French education. I have tutored French and Spanish for years as well as taught in public schools. Further, I recently completed ESL teacher training through the excellent program at the Port Washington Library and taught ESL classes there. My command of English, English vs. French and Spanish grammar and understanding of language teaching methodology make ESL an easy tutoring transition for me. ESL learners have immediate language needs so if you are looking for a targeted learning experience, I will work with you to help you learn what you need right now, whether you are an adult or a child, whether you need technical or conversational support. I look forward to meeting you.

French

I am an American-born NYS certified French and Spanish teacher with years of tutoring and public school teaching experience. As an English speaker I understand the pitfalls and frustrations in learning French while not currently immersed in the language. I work with you to bring as much of France and authenticity into our sessions as possible. I have visited the country frequently and have lived in Southern France for a year, granting me near-native fluency. My middle and high school students have done extremely well on the Grand Concours, the National French Exam, the French FLACS and Regents examinations. I have taught French beginner through college level courses, but will tailor my tutoring to your needs, whether for work, school, or personal plans. I look forward to hearing from you.
