Hello everyone, my name is Robert; I began studying Italian
when I was in eighth grade, 2001, and continued taking the language
up until my freshman year at St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, NY. During my sophomore year, I was hired by the then director of St. Thomas Aquinas College's Academic Skills Center (now Center for Academic Excellence) to be the college's Italian tutor with the recommendation of my Italian professor. After two years of tutoring, I became a College Reading
and Learning Association (CRLA) certified level 2 - Advanced Italian tutor. Recently, I was hired by Berlitz Language Center in White Plains, NY.
When I tutor, I have a very simple method of doing so. To me, a tutor's job is to reinforce something that a student has already learned in the classroom and perhaps doesn't quite understand. Once the student tells me what they are having difficulty with, I can jump right in. For example, during one particular session I had a student who had difficulty with conjugating verbs in the "passato prossimo," which is a tense in Italian that deals with past actions that still hold bearing on the present. To be more precise, this student was having trouble knowing when to use either of the two helping verbs for this tense (avere - to have, essere - to be). I was able to explain that essere is used only for certain action verbs in so that it made sense to the student. I am also very big on reviewing the Italian alphabet because it is essential for proper pronunciation.
