Qualifications: I am a NYS certified teacher in both chemistry and physics. I earned my undergraduate degree from Kansas State University in secondary science education and certified in Kansas to teach physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, physical science, general science and middle school science. I love science and I love teaching! I have a master’s degree from Walden University in Secondary Education.

Experience: I taught physics & chemistry in public high school for six years. In college, I taught physics and biology labs for three years. I also tutored college students in math, science and English for five years. I have taught Sunday school for children of all ages (toddler through teen) for many years. Currently, I am homeschooling our youngest child. I also work from home as an online educational consultant: teaching online, writing curriculum, editing and designing. I have helped several students to review for the SAT, focusing on both content and test-taking strategies.

Philosophy: I love helping students learn. All children and adults have different ways of learning, and I have a lot of techniques in my teacher bag of tricks to use when someone gets stuck. I have found that most learners benefit from some sort of hands –on learning. I try to identify where a student needs help and then come up with a strategy or strategies to use. I can help with general content, study skills, writing, test-taking strategies, or review to name a few areas of tutoring assistance. All ages of child and adult learners are welcome!

I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Regents

I have taught six years of Regents Chemistry and Regents Physics classes in public high schools. I have also tutored students in Regents Earth Science and Living Environment (Biology).

Study Skills

Learning how to study effectively is a key to success in any subject area. As a teacher and tutor I always pay attention to a student's study habits, and give suggestions based on what I observe. Both my undergraduate and graduate degrees are in education, so I have received training on helping students with their study skills. There are a plethora of possibilities for studying. My suggestions often have a lot to do with a particular student's strengths and how they learn.

Very easy-going. — Our daughter really liked her tutoring style and felt comfortable w/ her. Our daughter felt "she didn't PUSH me" which we liked and also Donna taught her (and consequently us!) some things she (our daughter) never knew before and it all made sense. We are pleased. ...
