Hello! My name is Sara, and I look forward to helping you find success in your studies. I enjoy learning and sharing what I have learned with others. One of my strengths is finding alternative ways to explain concepts. My wide-ranging interests help me find examples that make sense to my students.
While studying math, science, and education at UK, I also participated in humanities seminars and studied history, sociology, urban planning, photography, writing, and literature as a Gaines Fellow. After completing my MSEd from BU, I taught high school math and physics locally before taking time off for my family. For the past ten years I have been homeschooling our children through the middle and high school years. I have kept myself busy by occasionally teaching classes, in subjects such as literature and writing, for other home educated students. Although I specialize in secondary subjects, I have taught classes for younger children, as well.
It is very rewarding to spend time with a student individually and to witness the “Aha!” moment when that student grasps a new concept. If I can help you reach that moment, please let me know. Hello! Sara R. is a very organized and competent tutor, who clearly has the ability to assess and focus her instruction based on the student's needs. Her review summaries of each session are thorough and helpful. She was our first experience with tutoring, and we have been left with an impression of satisfaction and value. We will look no further than Sara should we need tutoring in her areas in the future.
Thank you, David. I have enjoyed working with your daughter and I would be happy to tutor her again.
Sara has tutored my daughter in 6th grade math and science for six months. She patiently allows my daughter to work through problems and gently reminds her of details that need attention. The format of the tutoring session varies from week to week which keeps the interest of my daughter. Often, Sara will incorporate current events as they apply to the topic that is being reviewed. My daughter looks forward to each session and is proud of the improvement of her grades.
Thank you, Sandra. I have enjoyed being a part of your daughter's improvement in comprehension and math skills.
We will continue to have Sara R. work with our daughter. She is always positive and patient. Our daughter was happy to go and was on time, which for 16 year old is a hard thing, unless they like what they are doing, which is the case with the tutor Sara R.
Not only was she on time, but she was often a little early! I, too, enjoyed our time together. I have been pleased to listen as she grasped the connections among the subtopics of chemistry and algebra.
We are so lucky to have found Sara! Our 8 year old son loves working with her and looks forward to his weekly math tutoring sessions. She makes the learning fun for him and he has shown so much improvement. Before tutoring, his math exams were in the 50s and 60s. After tutoring he is receiving grades in the high 80s! He even received an achievement award for his efforts. Engaging an 8 year old boy in his least favorite subject is not easy and we really appreciate Sara's patience and gentle manner. She also uses fun games to keep him interested. She is super reliable and always provides a very fast follow up on the session, too.
Thank you, Renee. I look forward to continuing to work with your son.
Sara was my son's tutor for more than a year, helping him with third and fourth grade math, history, reading, writing, geography and science. My son is easily distracted and likes to go on tangents while doing homework and give quick (and incorrect answers). Sara was able to redirect him, using patience and a keen common sense, allowing him to focus on the task and come to a correct answer on his own. Sara would also bring extra reading materials on genres that would interest my son, helping him gain an appreciation for fiction that I was trying to establish. I highly recommend Sara as a tutor.
It was a pleasure working with your son, Debbie. I will miss our sessions together.
Sara is a wonderful tutor--very thorough and patient. Not only is her assistance with the specific subject helpful, but equally so are the basic study skills that will transfer to other challenging subjects. I'm glad we found such a wonderful resource. My only regret was not engaging Sara earlier in the year!! Thank you, Sara!!
Thank you, Tracy. I enjoy working with your son. I will continue to search for additional ways to help him understand and retain the large amounts of information required for this challenging course.
I find Sara to be very patient with my son. Even though my son is a very well behaved child he at times struggles with maintaining interest in what is being taught. Sara finds ways to keep him engaged. She works with him 2 1/2 hours a week on 5th Grade ELA, Science and Math. Sara always has great feed back on what she is working on with my son and is always encouraging with her feedback. I see improvements in my son's vocabulary as well as his expressive language. My son wears bi-lateral hearing aids and has multiple learning disabilities and one-on-one reinforcement is critical to his success. My son has been working with Sara for 5 weeks now and we look forward to her working with him long term. My son has had a few tutors and many teachers who have a hard time knowing how to "teach" him and Sara seemed to know how to work with him right from the start. We would highly recommend Sara to anyone looking for a tutor in the Owego area.
Thank you, Lynn. I enjoy tutoring your son. His improvement is also due to your diligence in communicating both teacher expectations and your concerns. I look forward to continuing to work with both of you.
Sarah was a fantastic tutor to my son this summer. She was able to teach him concepts that he's struggled with for a long time, 3 different teachers and another tutoring company. She is adept at re-phrasing terminology and concepts to ensure actual understanding of each lesson, and reviewed until mastery of each step.
She was prompt and reliable, easy to reach, encouraging and patient with my son. I highly recommend her to anyone in need of tutoring. We will also use her again, should the need arise.
Thank you for your kind words, Brigit. I would be happy to work with your son in the future.
Sara was a great fit for my daughter for SAT & NYS Regent prep. She helped her organize her time and plan out a manageable review schedule. I would highly recommend her!
Thank you, Cynthia. It was a pleasure working with your daughter. Please let me hear the good news when she gets her results!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
One of my children has ADHD Inattentive Type. I homeschooled her from 6th through 12th grades. We consulted various teachers and psychologists as we searched for effective strategies to help her learn. She is now a senior at a well-respected university,
I played high school basketball, at the positions of center and forward. I participated in the women's intramural basketball league at the University of Kentucky. I have taught basketball skills as a playground supervisor and as part of homeschool gym classes.
I have enjoyed drawing since I was a child. During my education, I received recognition and high marks for my drawings in pencil, ink, and pastels. As a homeschooling mother, I explain and illustrate shape, line, form, composition, texture, value, and other concepts as I teach drawing.
As a homeschooling mother, I have taught classes in math, literature, science, art, and history to students from K through 6th grade. In addition, I have passed all of the available WyzAnt certification tests for elementary subjects.
During my time as a public school teacher, I taught Regents-level physics. I have also helped students review for the Comprehensive English exam, the Living Environment exam, the US History exam, Global History exam, and Regents math exams. My students have performed well on the exams.
I began learning American sign language in high school, when I spent a summer performing with The Singing Hands from West Virginia Rehabilitation Center. Throughout the years I have continued to learn more from deaf and hearing impaired friends, and continued to learn from print and web resources. As I have encountered ASL users from WV, KS, and NY, I have learned that ASL has at least as many different dialects as American English. Currently, I sign during the music portions of Wednesday and Sunday services at my church. Although I am not a state-certified interpreter, I interpreted entire services when a visitor needed such help.
Techniques for studying differ among disciplines and among learners. Each student has a unique learning style. I recommend and teach different strategies to my students, based upon their learning styles, concentration abilities, experience levels, and available resources. I have helped students with concentration difficulties, learning disabilities, and physical disabilities, as well as students who just needed the discipline of a schedule.
