Hello, Parents and Students. My background may well be considered unusual. After spending some 17 years in the Film and Television industry I returned to my first love, teaching. For the past 10 years I have been working at Washingtonville High School in Orange County New York. Among the events I have experienced there were the transitions from New York State's Sequential Math Program to New York State's Math A and Math B program in my first year and the more recent transition from Math A and Math B to New York State's Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry Program. In both situations, there was a period of adjustment for both students and teachers. During those transitions, I witnessed the difficulties students suffered as they and their teachers both struggled to adjust to the new curricula. I saw first-hand that students performed better and retained more information when they were exposed to the why as well as the how. It has become the basis of my teaching that explaining why some things are is as important as how to use them. I have used these lessons to help individual students with their school math work and their SAT and ACT math work for the past 4 years as a private tutor.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1, or Integrated Algebra is the study of solving equations for an unknown value. It also includes some coordinate geometry, statistics and some basic trigonometry. The New York State Integrated Algebra Exam is not an especially difficult test but it does cover a fair amount of material.

Algebra 2

Covered by the NY State Algebra 2 / Trigonometry Regents. This course goes well beyond the math the student has encountered previously. Topics such as Logarithms, Binomial Probability, and Complex Numbers are some of hurdles students face before they even face trigonometry.

Geometry is often a very difficult subject for students because it seems to be such a dramatic shift from the math they have learned previously. Learning Geometry is, however, a very important step in the development of a student's mathematical ability. Geometry teaches mental discipline and planning, two very useful skills. Students are often thrown by the idea of proofs, which is approximately half of the curriculum in Geometry. Unfortunately, many math teachers are not all that happy about teaching proofs and so the student does not really learn the techniques that make solving proofs, and by extension, solving complex mathematics problems, easier. I believe that Geometry is an excellent teacher.

SAT Math

SAT Math is a peculiar subject. The math itself is not all that difficult. Most high school students have already been exposed to all of the math covered in the SAT. The difficulty comes from 2 sources, time limits and the unusual form in which the questions are posed. One of the keys to excelling on the SAT is getting comfortable with the way Math topics are tested, and knowing how to approach the different questions. In school math, the way in which you arrive at an answer is often as important, indeed it is often more important, than the answer itself. This is not so on the SAT, all that matters is getting the right answer, so the student should learn strategies to answer different types of questions.

Covered by the NY State Algebra 2 / Trigonometry Regents. This course goes well beyond the math the student has encountered previously. Topics such as Logarithms, Binomial Probability, and Complex Numbers are some of hurdles students face before they even face trigonometry. The student will also need to do trigonometry of non-right triangles, the unit circle, and other trig topics.
