My passion is transforming struggling readers into fluent readers, and I have devoted my professional life to mastering this process. Although I am new to Wyzant, I have helped hundreds of students achieve reading fluency both in the classroom as a New York State certified educator and outside the classroom as a reading tutor.
I hold a master's degree in K-9 education and am trained in the Wilson Reading System, Orton-Gillingham, and Glass Analysis for decoding. My instructional approach is based on eight-week cycles targeting the three key components of literacy: decoding, fluency, and comprehension. At the end of each cycle, I measure progress using the Qualitative Reading Inventory (QRI5), then conference with the student and parent to set new reading goals and a plan to meet them.
In addition to my work as a reading specialist, I have briefed members of congress as an education advocate in Washington, DC, led NYC schools in modifying curricula to reflect the new Common Core State Standards, and developed project-based learning initiatives in partnership with Columbia University. I also host a weekly podcast on education.
I completed three graduate-level courses on differentiating instruction to students with ADHD. I apply concepts learned from this coursework when working with students with ADHD, including setting focus-building goals, using rewards systems, and partnering with a clinician to give feedback on student response to medical interventions.
