Hi! You can call me Syed. I'm a 24 year old graduate student at Columbia University completing my M.S./Ph.D in Electrical Engineering (EE). I have been a tutor for six years, and have had commendable success with my students. Most of my students in recent years have been enrolled in college. I have also had extensive experience in tutoring high school students with Math and Science courses, as well as preparing them for standardized tests such as the SATs and GREs.
I began tutoring on a one-on-one basis for high school students who were struggling with calculus and basic concepts in physics, chemistry, and biology about six years ago. I also assisted these students with their SAT I preparation in Critical Reading, Mathematics, and Writing at the time.
When I attended college at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), I worked as a student tutor for the Mathematics Department for three years. During this period, I was responsible for holding conferences in a classroom environment for 15-20 students twice a week for various college level Math courses such as Differential Equations and Multivariate Calculus, as well as one-on-one sessions with students struggling with some of the core concepts in these courses. I also worked as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at WPI for a year and half, providing guidance for courses such as Signals and Systems Analysis and Introduction to ECE.
Upon my graduation from WPI, I gained admission to Columbia University, and was appointed a TA for Introduction to Electrical Engineering for two semesters. I assisted students in a lab setting during this time, as well as providing one-on-one instruction. I was also hired by the Columbia Athletics Department to provide one-on-one tutoring for college level Physics to struggling Athletes, and was highly reviewed.
My approach to tutoring is to focus on clarifying fundamental concepts as opposed to blindly completing problem sets. This approach works best in a one-on-one setting, as I can immediately notice if a student has truly comprehended what is in the text. I prefer to draw examples from real life in my explanations in order to help my students visualize the principles that are being studied, and I strongly believe that any student can succeed if they can associate a seemingly incomprehensible equation with a clear picture.
Feel free to contact me if you need any help! Together, we will be able to meet your academic goals, if not exceed them!

I've had nearly 5 years of experience in MATLAB scripting. As an undergraduate at WPI, I have taken numerous courses that required a solid understanding of MATLAB. These include: Continuous/Discrete Time Signals, Communication Systems, Biomedical Signal Processing, Biomedical Imaging, and
I've also taken graduate courses that are MATLAB-intensive in Columbia University. These include:
Digital Signal Processing, Digital Image Processing, Computational Neuroscience, and Biophotonics
Bayesian Models Machine Learning.
My current graduate research work involves writing an image classification algorithm to detect breast carcinoma in MATLAB. I've also tutored Intro to ECE (ECE 2010) and Discrete Time Signal Processing (ECE 2312) at WPI for a year, which involved tutoring students on basic MATLAB techniques.
