Hi! My name is Harper, and I'm currently a senior at the Spence School in Manhattan. This September I'll be heading out west to Stanford University. I've grown up a math nerd, and I plan to study Management Science and Engineering at Stanford.
I discovered my passion for tutoring at seven, when I was so excited about what I was learning in school that I made it my mission to teach my three-year-old sister everything I knew. I wanted her to appreciate the world as much as I did. By the time Skylar entered Kindergarten, I had taught her addition, subtraction, and basic multiplication.
I have spent my high school years working with both young children and students in middle and high school.
I am head of Spence’s Upper School Tutors, which partners Upper Schoolers with Middle Schoolers or other Upper Schoolers in need of additional help or clarity in a subject. I also founded Homework Helpers, an extension to Upper School Tutors that allows Upper School students to help students in grades 2, 3, and 4 with their homework while simultaneously serving as role models and mentors. Teachers, parents, and tutees themselves have expressed effusively just how pivotal US Tutors and Homework Helpers have been in the tutees’ classroom confidence; it is incredibly rewarding to help both peers and young Spence girls overcome areas of frustration and struggle.
YOUNG CHILDREN: Aside from Homework Helpers, I have also worked as a counselor for rising Kindergarteners, and spent two years working with preschoolers at a non-profit preschool in NYC.
MATH: I have taken the highest level of math offered since fifth grade. I am at the top of my BC Calculus class and will study engineering (Management Science & Engineering) at Stanford University. I can tutor almost any level math; I particularly love tutoring middle and high schoolers in Algebra I and II.
SAT HELP: Though I love math, I am also exceptionally good at teaching grammar. I received an 800 on the SAT Writing section both times I took the test, and after only thirty minutes of teaching a peer some grammar rules, his score rose 60 points.
I know the "tricks" of the SAT. The SAT Reading section is notorious for its misleading or seemingly-complicated questions; I can teach your child the proper way to read and interpret the SAT Reading sections. I received a 770 on the SAT Writing section.
ORGANIZATIONAL/STUDY SKILLS: I am incredibly organized, and can teach your child efficient and effective ways to prep for tests and maintain an organized study environment.
WRITING/PUBLIC SPEAKING: I have an extensive background in writing essays and creative stories. I can edit your child's papers and help him or her with structure, grammar, concision, and linguistic style. As Head of Spence Model Congress, I am skilled at crafting persuasive arguments and delivering them in a confident, effective manner. I am also an actress (school plays and professional Film/TV) and work weekly at Mt. Sinai Hospital hosting two game shows aired throughout the pediatrics unit of the hospital.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions; I'd love to work with you!
