About Claire

I love helping people attain their goals, which is why I teach. I prefer to tutor because I always see the greatest results when I work with students One to One. Working One to One allows me to zero in on exactly what your individual strengths and weaknesses are, whether our work together is focused on grammar, accent modification, or building job-specific vocabulary. One to One also helps us build a relationship of trust and confidence, so essential to the learning process. Accent Modification will always be, for me, the most valuable coursework in my TESOL master's program, and it is a part of every lesson plan that I customize for each student. I will use every tool and skill I have, including my early background in the theater arts to help you improve your communication skills.

I have more than ten years of experience teaching classrooms from level One to Advanced in both general and vocational ESL in engineering, hospitality, and healthcare to name a few, as well as academic writing at two and four-year colleges in New York City.
Other skill sets include Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Photoshop.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I have worked with the New York Association of New Americans 1990 -1998, as an instructor, and later as member of development team, created workforce curricula - general and specific to occupations. I taught vocational ESL, interview skills, resume and cover letter writing and was Director of Career Services 1999-2013 - Met Council, NYC - education and training programs including workshops in networking, interviewing, resume development, use of social media such as linked in

ESL/ESOL

I received my Masters degree in teaching TESOL -Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at Hunter College. My classroom experience includes 8 years of full time teaching at a resettlement agency including vocational ESL, 4 semesters teaching reading, writing, occupational ESL and general ESL at two community colleges in NYC. My One to One experience includes 1 year of full time tutoring at a resettlement agency as well as private clients from various professional walks of life. I customize my tutoring to fit the students needs and take into consideration each student's preferred learning approach.

Film

I worked in film from 1982 - 1990 as a film apprentice editor and then as an assistant editor. I began in a commercials edit company cutting ads for Pepsi, and Chrysler (our top accounts). I switched to film and worked on picture and sound. My biggest successes were working in Woody Allen's shop for a year (1988)- New York Stories, Another Woman - and working for Godfrey Reggio on his masterpiece, Koyanisqatsi. My edit skills pre-date digital but my knowledge of the industry is still applicable. I am also a film buff.

Photography

I studied SLR photography at Hunter College for three semesters, two of them with the late Roy Decarava and during that time, learned dark room techniques. Since then, I have migrated to digital photography and use Photoshop to correct, enhance and manipulate images to create original artwork.
