My name is Nick Z. and I love teaching Chinese. I have been teaching and tutoring Mandarin Chinese part time since 2004 when I was a graduate student at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. All my students excel in their class after they study with me. What's more important, they enjoy learning Chinese.

My Education Background:

B.S. in Computer Science, Wuhan University (China);
M.S. in Computer Science, The Ohio State University;
MBA University of Maryland University College.

My Chinese Teaching/Tutoring Experience:

I taught at Ohio Contemporary Chinese School in the summers of 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. I taught Chinese to students 5 to 11 year old at the After School Workshop at PS 6 The Lillie Devereaux Blake School in New York City from January to June 2010 and from September 2012 to March 2013. I tutored kids from 4 to 15 years old in the summers of 2011 and 2012.

How My Teaching Methods Are Different:

Motivation is a big issue in many students when learning a second language simply because they don't feel the need to learn the language. When I first start with a student, I combine music, games, movies, stories, and field trips into my lesson plans to generate interests in the language. This worked for all my kids. Within 1 to 2 weeks, they usually start to look forward to our Chinese lessons.

The next step is to have a comprehensive curriculum. I design my own curriculum and use several great books on Chinese language learning. Current events are incorporated into my lesson plans. I also customize lessons for each student.

Contact me if you have any questions. Look forward to speaking with you soon!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Microsoft Outlook

My major in my college and graduate school is both Computer Science and I have been a computer user for over 17 years. Family and friends often come to me if they need any computer help. I have been using Microsoft Outlook on a daily basis since 1997. I use all four major modules in Outlook: Mail, Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks. I'm confident I can help anyone master the tool in as little as one week.

My Education Background:

B.S. in Computer Science, Wuhan University (China);
Ph.D. in Computer Science, The Ohio State University;
MBA, University of Maryland University College.

My Teaching/Tutoring Methods:

I believe people learn by doing. I will demonstrate the steps and then ask the student to complete the task on their own and then redo it at planned times.
