I am a composer, pianist, songwriter, music director and arranger with 30 years' experience working in New York City. My primary areas of interest are classical music and musical theatre, but I'm knowledgeable about many areas of popular music as well. I teach composition, ear training and sight-singing, music theory and piano.

I have helped improve the musical skills of clients from age eight to seventy-two. My approach is patient and low-key; I find that motivation comes best from love of the material, rather than pep talks, browbeating or guilt. Many of my clients have told me that they appreciate my individualized approach, building on strengths to bolster weaknesses.

I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music composition, and I'm currently working on a PhD in the same field. I have a wide variety of compositional experience, having composed chamber music, orchestral music, opera, musical theatre, and pop songs (among other things) for professional performers and venues. Several of my pieces have been recorded, including one disk release by Albany records last year devoted entirely to my music.

Ear Training

I am a professional musician with 30 years' experience, and I use ear training skills every day. As a music director and coach for musical theatre actors, I have extensive experience helping people at all levels of musical literacy improve their skills. I have had many, many students and clients over the years thank me for my patience and good humor in helping them understand and practice difficult musical tasks.

General Computer

I am a musician by trade, but I have had a sideline for many years as a technology tutor, helping people figure out how to use Macs, Windows PCs, iPads, iPhones and other gadgets. I'm patient, and I understand the frustrations of dealing with these machines—I use them every day.

I read manuals so you don't have to!

General Music

I am a professional musician with 30 years' experience. I am familiar with a wide variety of musical styles and genres, and have a thorough grounding in music history, music theory and ear training, and a working knowledge of contemporary music technology. I am a patient and good-humored teacher, willing to concentrate on a student's goals.

Macintosh

I have been using the Macintosh operating system for almost 25 years, and iOS since shortly after it came out. I have been answering questions about how to use Apple products (and helping troubleshoot devices) that entire time. I have provided desktop support to office workers using Macintosh, including Mail, Microsoft Office and other software. I'm very comfortable with the Apple ecosystem, including Time Machine, iTunes and iCloud—I use all of them myself.

Microsoft Windows

I have worked part-time over the last few years in desktop support for small companies that included Windows desktops and laptops. I've been tutoring individuals on the use of computers, including Windows machines, for several years. I am patient, and good at explaining the underlying metaphors of computer use.

Music Theory

I am a professional musician with 30 years' experience, and I use music theory skills every day. As a music director and coach for musical theatre actors, I have extensive experience helping people at all levels of musical literacy improve their skills. I have had many, many students and clients over the years thank me for my patience and good humor in helping them understand and practice difficult musical tasks.

Piano

I am a professional pianist with 30 years' experience, working in classical, music theatre and pop venues. I am a patient, good-humored teacher. Curriculum and goals are individualized for the student; some people want to play pop music, some to play Mozart, and that's fine with me.

Sight Singing

I am a professional musician with 30 years' experience, and I use sight-singing skills every day. As a music director and coach for musical theatre actors (and choral director), I have extensive experience helping people at all levels of musical literacy improve their skills. I have had many, many students and clients over the years thank me for my patience and good humor in helping them understand and practice difficult musical tasks.
