I am a current senior at Columbia University studying Earth and Environmental Science and Political Science--so I have a very varied background that allows me to tutor a lot of subjects.

I have been tutoring Spanish, writing, math, sciences, and more since I was in high school and have worked with students with ages ranging from the middle school level to college level. I have also worked with younger students in reading, writing, and basic math as a classroom Teaching Assistant and student helper.

For me, the best way to approach tutoring is to make the subject both relatable and easy to understand and this is achievable by getting to know each student individually and really understand what their difficulties are and put the subject in terms of their interests and hobbies. My hope is to make the subject more interesting and help each client learn in the process.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am currently completing my degree at Columbia University in Political Science and Earth and Environmental Science. I have tutored writing to middle school, high school, and university students for the past eight years. I also proofread essays and other writing materials for university and high school students. I have worked with eighth grade and high school students preparing for the SAT and ACT vocabulary, writing, and reading comprehension questions.

Study Skills

I teach students how to study which is just as important as learning the subject matter itself. I have numerous successful study techniques and strategies that I teach my students and use myself in my coursework. I help students become more organized and alert during work, helping them have better time management and material retention.

Writing

Writing is probably my favorite subject to tutor. I have a very strong attention to detail and as the people I have worked with can tell you, I am extremely tough and it pays off.

Very helpful and patient! — My writing is not very good because English is my second language! Fortunately, I found Amanda through this website. She is very helpful! I always struggled in my papers with grammatical mistakes, structure of paragraphs, and logical relations among sentences. But Amanda helped me go through everything and told me why it is wrong or right. I feel like my writing has been improved after her tutor ...
