I am a published writer, award-winning former teacher, have been an educator for fifteen years and an independent tutor for over ten years. In Virginia, I attended Longwood University, a university well-known for creating outstanding teachers, and graduated summa cum laude with an English major, theatre minor and earned a teaching certificate for secondary education (grades 6-12). More recently, I graduated with an MA from the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University, where I created a program that involved writing and social change.
Since moving to Manhattan, I worked at Sacred Heart and The Browning School and have tutored students from The Browning School, Sacred Heart, Dalton, The Lab School, Horace Mann, Nightingale, and the U.N. School, among others. My emphasis has been on helping students improve their writing skills, including analytical and creative writing. I assist students in grammar, usage, mechanics, style and organization, and I help students find their own voice, whether in middle school English or writing essays for college admissions. I have also tutored English as a Second Language for young people and adults, and have coached young people and adults in playwriting. As a playwright, I have been commissioned, produced internationally and published in anthologies--including college textbooks. I have served as a playwright-in-residence to coach young people in playwriting and screenwriting. As I am passionate about my love of learning and my own writing, I help students make personal connections to their material and find their own passions.
With additional training in yoga and diversity work, I look at the wide variety of needs of the young people I've worked with, including raising self-confidence and self-esteem. I am patient and kind and believe that everyone has the capacity to improve, and I create a supportive environment with a concrete plan of action for improvement.
While I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy, if a student is sick, I will engage in make-up sessions within one week if necessary.
I look forward to meeting you and getting started!
I am most interested in helping young people or adults who are interested in writing short plays. I have been published in several anthologies and produced in Germany, India, England, Hungary and across the United States. I also have extensive experience as a theatre director with young people and would enjoy helping students explore monologues for theatre class. I directed plays at The Browning School, for both the Middle School and Upper School, for five years.
