My name is Alexandra and I am looking to tutor! I am currently a student at Columbia University, working towards obtaining my Masters Degree in Social Work. Prior to pursuing this degree, I taught first grade for two years and I am a certified K-5 teacher. Additionally, I was an Instructional Leader so I developed Common Core aligned Reading, Writing, and Math curricula. I also tutored K-2 students while teaching. Additionally, I led small group reading and phonics instruction to help struggling readers meet grade-level benchmarks. My success rate leading these students to success was nearly 100%. As an undergraduate, I attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I graduate magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with my BA in Psychology. During my time there, I worked as a teaching fellow, a peer mentor, and tutored in an after-school program for three years. I also have taught organization skills and college planning classes at NYU's Upward Bound Program. I am passionate, committed, energetic, and loving!
I look forward to hearing from you!
I am qualified to tutor Elementary subjects because I am a certified K-5 Elementary School teacher. I taught first grade for two years and was the Instructional Leader for my grade level last year. I provided tutoring to my struggling students in individual and small group settings. Additionally, I developed common core-aligned curriculum in Reading Comprehension, Phonics, Math, and Writing.
Since I taught both intensive phonics and guided reading blocks when I taught first grade, I am very comfortable tutoring phonics. I am able to initially evaluate a student's skill set by testing their knowledge of letters, letter sounds, sight words, blends, digraphs, dipthongs, etc. This will help me assess where to begin with my instruction. Additionally, I have a wealth of resources to use such as visual aids, hands-on manipulatives, workbooks and online programs.
I taught a study skills class to struggling high school juniors and seniors in the NYU program Upward Bound. I helped these students develop organizational and study skills to prepare for college. Additionally, I am currently a social work intern at a NYC high school and spend a considerable amount of time assisting students in developing study skills. Examples of these skills include making note cards, organizational skills to keep track of notes/work, and forming successful study groups.
