Hello!

My name is Leah, and I am a professional grant writer. I graduated summa cum laude from Brandeis University, and I specialize in academic and expository writing.

I have a year of experience tutoring high school, college and graduate students in writing. I can help you plan your writing, edit and proofread your writing for grammar and spelling mistakes, and generally improve your writing style.

My approach is to help students become better writers through discovering the writing process. I begin by selecting a topic or unpacking an assigned topic, and move through the different stages of crafting a piece of writing including research, outlining, sentence structure, flow and style.

I work full-time, but I am available after business hours Monday-Thursday and on Sundays.

I look forward to meeting you and helping you reach success!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I majored in anthropology at Brandeis University, and graduated with highest honors in the subject. I have studied a wide range of societies and anthropological theory, and I am familiar with different sub-areas, including medical, economic, political and psychological anthropology. I also tutored another student at Brandeis for one semester in an anthropology course on communications and media cross-culturally.

Portuguese

I am a fluent, though not native, Portuguese speaker. I learned to speak in the Brazilian state of Bahia, and I am frequently praised by native speakers for having an excellent accent and excellent pronunciation.

For those who are new to Portuguese, I help students develop a solid grammatical base, focusing on the structure of the language and verb conjugations, as well as building vocabulary and learning popular sayings and phrases. For students who already speak Portuguese, I offer Portuguese-only conversation sessions to help improve fluency, comprehension, pronunciation, and widen their vocabulary.

Regents

As a graduate of New York City public high school Brooklyn Tech, I have taken multiple regents exams in various subjects. I scored 90 or above on all regents in English and social studies, and 80 or above on the chemistry and biology regents. Given that English, history and social studies are my strongest subject areas, I am particularly qualified to tutor for the regents in those subject areas.

SAT Reading

I scored a 2160 on the SAT, with a 730 on the reading section, and a 740 on the writing section. To prepare for the exam, I focus on building up the student's writing, grammar and vocabulary, and on test taking strategies that will help improve your score, even when you don't know all the answers.

Writing

I wrote a column for the student newspaper of Brandeis University for all four years I was enrolled there. I also received highest honors for my senior thesis in anthropology. I specialize in argumentative essay-writing, but am also well-versed in expository writing. I focus on the writing process in order to improve students' writing ability, and I break down any writing assignment step by step to help them understand everything that goes into great writing.
