I received my BA in biology with a minor in music from Cornell University and my MS in population biology from UC Davis. I have taught environmental biology as an adjunct professor at a community college and have experience teaching general biology and evolutionary genetics at the college level. I also have experience with statistics, especially working with the R programming language. I enjoy teaching biology concepts and breaking them down into components to make them easier to understand. I have not been a paid tutor for a while (since high school), but I have worked with students one-on-one through twice weekly office hours in all of the classes I have taught.
I am also a native Japanese speaker--I am interested in being a conversation partner if you would like to practice your spoken Japanese--and I can also teach basic reading and writing. I am also a musician. I started playing piano at three years old and violin at ten.
I studied biology as an undergraduate at Cornell University and as a master's student at UC Davis. I have taught introductory biology courses at the junior and senior college level. I have also taught students on an one-on-one basis through weekly sessions at UC Davis's Biological Learning Center.
I have taken genetics as an undergraduate at Cornell University. In addition, I have been a teaching assistant/discussion leader for an Introductory Evolution class, which focused primarily on evolutionary genetics. I received my master's in Population Biology, and the coursework and research involved in the program was highly quantitative, with much emphasis on population genetics.
I have been playing piano since I was three years old, having participated in many competitions. I also performed in many settings, including chamber groups, orchestral accompaniment, musical pit accompaniment, and vocal and instrumental soloist accompaniment. I was a semifinalist at the Cornell Concerto Competition in 2007.
I have been playing violin since the 4th grade and have undertaken leadership roles during my time in orchestras. I have been a section leader in school orchestras and concert mistress of a community orchestra. I have also played in small ensembles, in musical pit accompaniment, and in fiddle groups.
My coursework at Cornell University focused primarily on organismal biology, including two vertebrate anatomy courses and an ichthyology course. I am also familiar with intertidal organisms through my work at Shoals Marine Laboratory. My graduate work focused on fish morphology. I have also taught laboratory classes with an emphasis on the biology of invertebrates.
Very patient and very very clear. — Tomomi is a gem. She tutors biology and algebra for my daughter in 9th grade and middle school math for my middle schooler. She has a very gentle way about her however, don't underestimate her ability to be clear and make connections to the material. She is terrific at it. I have overheard her examples and analogies and her "think about it like this..." She is the bomb. ...
