I'm a fully trained professional pianist, musical director, and composer who works in the theater. I have a degree in music composition from Binghamton University. I also have extensive experience writing and editing for publications. These are two very different fields, but both are fascinating to me.
I'm very aware of the younger generation's faulty use of English, so my standards are high in tutoring. With work and motivation, my students quickly can upgrade their grammar and usage to write and speak beautifully, eloquently, clearly.
As a composer, I'm fully qualified to teach music at all levels, and in both classical and popular styles. I would say that if you choose me from the various tutors you see on this website, it's because you want someone rigorous, positive, and representing the time-honored standards of precision, expressiveness, and technical excellence in English or in musical composition, theory or performance.
W. Gregory Ni. has taught Composition at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music (1986-89)and numerous other schools. He is an established composer with premiered works in New York, Seattle, Prague, and other European capitals. He was written for symphony orchestra, chorus, chamber groups, and numerous piano and theater pieces, including the full range between classical, jazz and theater styles. He graduated from Manhattan School of Music with a Bachelor's Degree in Composition in 1986. His approach to tutoring always balances creative freedom with a strong foundation in technical aspects.
I am a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music in 1986; rigorous classical training backs up everything I teach -- though I also have extensive experience with jazz and popular music; I've performed solo concerts all over Europe and in the United States; My approach tries to elicit the musicality of the student while always focusing on expert technique, including relaxation, musical exercises, music theory where relevant, repertoire building, and performance practice. Taught at Brooklyn Conservatory of Music in the 1980s.
I have been giving lecture-concerts for 30 years in which I stand in front of audiences and introduce them to classical music, sometimes inviting people up onstage. As well, I have a side career as an actor, (which is, of course, public speaking)- In San Francisco I owned a company that performed editorial services. Let's get you to find the confidence within you to make a clear, articulate and interesting presentation!
My songs have been featured in cabarets at Don't Tell Mama's, the Waldorf Astoria, the Oak Room and many other places. I've composed and musically directed shows in New York for 30 years, including one on Off-Broadway playing right now at the Actors' Temple Theater (Siren's Heart). I've taught songwriting and improvisation in workshop; my approach is to strengthen the student's understanding of the numerous conventions of the genre he or she is working in; I put great emphasis on stimulating the imagination, then using professional techniques.
