Hi, I'm a journalist and a book geek with a B.A. from Tufts and an M.A. in Journalism from NYU. I was a certified teacher in the Los Angeles Public School District where I lived for 8 years before I moved back to NYU for my M.A. at New York University. I'm a New Yorker at heart!
I think college prep is one of the most nerve wracking times for students, and also parents. I totally get it, and I can help make this time less of a mystery and just break it down into a list of things to do in order write a successful college essay, write a successful essay on the SAT, and also how to study for the Verbal and Reading Comprehension sections of the SAT. While it is a matter of repetition and practice, there is a system of best practices to use while taking this particular standardized test, and I wish to share them with you in order to raise your score and confidence!
I have experience in this area. When I lived in Los Angeles as a school teacher (I moved back to my beloved NYC 4 years ago, and this is where my family is), I was tutoring students privately in SAT Verbal, SAT Reading Comprehension and also College Essay Writing. A lot of the times, my students thought they had to read everything so carefully while taking tests and they ran out of time. Or they fell for trick answers.
I taught them how to skim, how to take quick notes and get used to finding the trick questions. I also helped students figure out how to write successful essays that were clear in hypothesis, had structure, plenty of supporting evidence and also was clear of silly mistakes like spelling and grammar.
Preparing for college and studying for the exams to get into college was a daunting task for myself as a teen who had high expectations. I went through the process of meeting with a college consultant, taking Kaplan test prep courses and applying to all the top schools. And when I went to grad school, I understood what was expected of me, and so I got into a top grad program with ease.
There is a way to successful navigate this process--so let me help.
I am a freelance journalist who has cooked over a lifetime. I used to cover restaurant reviews, and now I cover nutrition and food trends. Cooking is a passion of mine, and I subscribe to cooking blogs, cooking magazines and am constantly resting the recipes out that I find.
Cooking is an art and a science. Often ingredients are there for a purpose--to bind ingredients together or to make something rise. So, I always say follow the recipe and the order of it, because it is like a science experiment, and once you gain confidence, you can tinker with the flavors or create substitutes for binding agents, like I have over my lifetime.
I tutored in testing preparation for the ISEEs when I was a public school teacher in Los Angeles. The ISEEs require repetitive practice testing as well as being able to figure out the meaning of words that are unfamiliar. So, I begin by giving the student vocabulary prefixes and roots and suffixes to learn, so that if he or she encounters an unfamiliar word, at the very least he or she can make an educated guess.
Also, I prep the student in the types of questions he or she will encounter on the test, and what sort of tools should be used for each section.
I am a former English teacher (who was certified in Los Angeles, CA), who also worked for four different private tutoring companies in Los Angeles. I tutored in both test preparation for the ISEE, SSAT and SAT as well as all subject matters. Currently, I am a freelance journalist with a Masters in Journalism.
I understand organization and breaking down tasks is the key to managing what often seems like to be too much in too little time. This is something everyone struggles with, so I have often simply taught my students and tutoring clients to simply prioritize, write it down, and set aside 10 minutes a day to go over what needs to be done that day, then the week, and to organize folders or files in computer.
I do this myself, and it works. I am confident I can help guide someone into practicing these really valuable lifetime habits!
I am a lifelong swimmer who can tread water, do backstroke, freestyle, breaststroke, sidestroke and dive. I swim everyday, because it's a cardio workout that is not only easy on the body, but it is centering and helps you sleep. I took swimming lessons from ages 8 to 12, and I am now happy to help future swimmers learn the value of swimming, so that they can fend for themselves if they are ever in a falling overboard situation.
I have practiced vinyasa yoga for 7 years. It's a flowing form of yoga that requires controlled breathing and focus, which is why I love it. It helps me remain focused in other areas of my life, which is why I encourage young people to start yoga, because if I had known this back in high school, I would have managed stress better at a much younger age.
Yoga is about serenity, focus and body acceptance. I think it is one of the most useful tools for young women especially, who experience many pressures and expectations.
It is also a form of exercise that burns a lot of calories and gives you a mental boost.
