My name is Melanie and I just moved back to New York City after living and teaching English in South Korea for a year and a half. My background is in journalism and economics so I have very good grammar and math skills. I grew up doing inventory with my dad for his business, which is essentially counting....a lot. I have done internships, written and copy edited for various publications in Connecticut and all around New York. When I was in Korea, I taught children 5-14 years old. I am especially good at working with younger students as I was primarily a kindergarten teacher there. I also have a niece and nephew I love to play with. Before I left for Korea, I received my TEFL/TESOL certification. I taught interactive communicative EFL classes to adults and evaluated by fellow students' performances during their lessons, so I have extensive experience tutoring ESL to adults. I also tutored adolescent Irish students in creative writing while I studied abroad in Dublin, Ireland during university.
I currently work for a women's community building nonprofit in downtown Manhattan and I would really like to make some extra income by doing what I love, helping students learn, because not only do the students learn, but so do I!
During my time at university, I took several design and print journalism classes, which not only covered the basics of InDesign, but they also allowed me to explore new and emerging design techniques. I have several examples of my work that earned me very high marks of which I am more than happy to provide for review. I also continue to use InDesign on a monthly basis for my own personal use.
During my undergraduate degree, I worked for my school's Information Technology Learning Center as a Training Specialist. I was responsible for revamping our Photoshop curriculum and taught teachers, faculty and staff how to use the program. I still use it regularly for volunteer design projects and personal use.
I not only taught 7th grade students in Korea, but I also taught writing and grammar to 9 to 12-year-old Irish students as well. While I was attending university and studying abroad in Dublin, I worked for a Creative Writing Center, which functioned as an after school program dedicated to improving the writing skills of underprivileged Irish children. They made their lessons really educational and fun, which I would like to bring to my lesson as well.
I received my TEFL/TESOL Certification from the TEFL International, New York Center. There, I taught interactive communicative EFL classes to adults and evaluated peer performance I selected course books, and I studied methodology and English grammar. I planned curriculum, chapters, and lessons and I prepared extra-activity material.
As the head writing teacher at my school in Seoul, South Korea, I decided to incorporate more grammar lessons and testing in order to create a stronger foundation of skills for our students.
In addition, throughout my journalism career, I have been assigned to edit stories from a variety of publications focusing mostly on grammar, spelling, sentence structure, verb usage and other similar areas.
I have been using a Macintosh system my entire life. I have used many common as well as advanced programs on this platform and I understand the different mechanics between this system and a PC system. I like to use a step-by-step approach with a particular focus on the student's interest area when teaching Macintosh.
I use Microsoft Outlook on a daily basis at my current job. I have a lot of experience creating tutorials for students and colleagues. It would be no problem for me to put together any and all Microsoft Outlook tutorials or learning materials a potential student could need.
Phonics was one of my main subject areas to teach during my time as a kindergarten teacher in Seoul, South Korea. We used a variety of different methods such as classroom games, homework worksheets, role-playing, reading, sing-alongs as well as many other methods. Parents seemed to be very pleased with my teaching strategies.
While teaching in South Korea, my school focused on a few specific areas of our reading curriculum including reading accuracy and fluency, reading comprehension and essay writing relating to reading in and outside of class. We used a variety of techniques and programs to make our students learn to love reading and become very good at it!
One of my main jobs as a teacher in South Korea was to help my students develop good study skills. Students there spend the majority of their days in school and they also have a lot of academic and extracurricular activities with homework, so organization is key. I also volunteered with low income youth in Dublin, Ireland helping them with their study, reading and writing skills.
I earned my TEFL/TESOL certification from the New York Center of TEFL International. It was a 120-hour residential TEFL training program where I planned curriculum, chapters, and lessons; prepared extra-activity material. I taught interactive communicative EFL classes to adults and evaluated peer performance. I selected course books and I studied methodology and English grammar.
I have written for many publications including The Nation magazine, PolicyMic.com, The Ithaca Journal, IC View magazine, GritTV with Laura F. and The Ithacan. Some of these jobs and freelance projects took place online, in New York City and in Ithaca, New York. I have also been blogging for years.
