Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Math)
Hi, my name is Wesley. Having attended both Stuyvesant High School and MIT, I am available to tutor in a variety of math subjects as well as standardized test preparation (see below for list).
I have more than 8 years of teaching experience, being a volunteer teacher at the Salvation Army, SCORE! coach, SAT tutor at AIM Academy, and private tutoring with middle school, high school, college, and adult students. Math has always been my passion, and I tailor my teaching methods to best match each individual student. Through my experience, I know which tutoring strategies work and which just create busywork. Additionally, I can also recommend which books and study guides to use and how to best prepare for the specific exam.
Most importantly, I will teach a student how to attack the problem and how to think of the solution. Anyone can pick up study guides and practice exam books and go through it while checking their work with solutions at the back. However, the book doesn't tell you what you are doing wrong or how to improve yourself. If you want to be sure to do well on your first attempt, I will teach you how to approach problems, techniques, timing and approaches that cannot be found in any one single study guide but rather a compilation of years of experience and expertise.
I have tutored students in many schools and colleges including but not limited to the following:
Middle School: Dwight, Baruch, St. Bernard, Hunter
High School: Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, St. Ann's, Riverdale, Horace Mann, Dalton, UNIS
Colleges: NYU, Columbia, UChicago, Cornell, MIT.
I look forward to hearing from you!
P.S. My areas of expertise include Pre-Algebra, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus (AP & college level), IB Math SL & HL, and Multivariate Calculus. I can also help you prepare for the Regents, SHSAT, SSAT, PSAT, SAT, ACT, SAT Math Level I & II, and GRE.
Past Test Scores:
SAT CR/M/W - 800/800/770
GRE Math 170
AP Calculus BC 5
SAT Math Level I 780
SAT Math Level II 800
All 3 Math Regents 100
UPDATE - To maximize the effectiveness of my tutoring and individual attention I can provide, I am currently accepting only one more new student until end of May 2015. Please feel free to ask me about summer math acceleration programs. Hi, my name is Wesley. I hired Wesley in 2009 to help my daughter prepare for the SAT and we couldn't have been happier with the results. When Wesley started tutoring my daughter, her score was in the mid 1700s, and after weekly sessions with Wesley, she got a 2130. It was a great improvement thanks to Wesley's personalized tutoring sessions.
Wesley was professional, patient and punctual. He customized each lesson to suit my daughter's weaknesses and motivated her to spend extra time preparing for the SAT. At the end, my daughter was delighted with Wesley for tutoring her. My daughter used Wesley to tutor her for the GRE last summer. Wesley helped my daughter raised her quant scores by 11 points. She ended up being accepted at the program she wanted. I highly recommend Wesley. He is enthusiastic and really wants to help his students succeed. Thank you again, Wesley!
Wesley has been superb. He explains the subject matter thoroughly and clearly. He is serious, but also has a nice sense of humor. My son is very happy that he is working with Wesley. Wesley is super smart, a great teacher, organized, purposeful, very professional, and reliable. We are delighted.
Wesley is doing a wonderful job with my daughter. He is patient, kind, well prepared and well organized. He is easy to reach, and always responds to a text or email. It is a pleasure working with him.
I have a serious lack of mathematical skill. Wesley is excellent at breaking things down in an easy to understand way. He is very patient, knows many tricks to help you understand complex mathematical calculations. He takes his time and makes sure that you understand each concept prior to moving on to more complex mathematical solutions. I highly recommend him!
My daughter was having difficulties with 9th grade geometry. After a couple of lessons with Wesley, she recovered her confidence and has improved her math skills. We are very happy to have met Wesley, he is always on time, patient, and eager to help a confused student.
Wesley was an excellent tutor in AP Calculus AB. He was well prepared, extremely diligent, and patient. He is very good at explaining complex math concepts. He provided review work and sample exams that helped deepen understanding and build confidence in the subject. With the benefit of his hard work and academic support, test studying and practice translated into a stellar performance on the exam.
I was very pleased with Wesley's work as he is conscientious and professional. My daughter found his explanations to be clear and concise, as a result she understood the lesson well.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored fellow classmates for the Probability P Exam and they have passed as a result. I have also passed Probability P Exam this past year. I am as comfortable tutoring this subject as I have with calculus and other subjects.
Calculus uses simple concepts to solve problems that would be impossibly tedious to do using the classical techniques. Building a strong Calculus foundation is extremely helpful to many professions, especially engineers. Over the years, I have helped many confused high school and college students realize that Calculus is much simpler than most of the math that they have seen before. I have a few testimonials from such students.
I have taken the Regents with the following grades during high school:
Chemistry - 95
Physics - 98
Biology - 96
Trigonometry, Geometry, Algebra - 98, 97, 98
US History - 100
English - 93
Though I am most comfortable with Math, I am fully confident in my ability to teach any or all of these Regent exams. In addition, I am experienced with the Regents testing format. Some subjects like US History have questions that are primarily reading comprehension based and do not actually require knowledge of historical events. I believe the format of the Regents is less rigorous than other standardized testing and thus there are more testing taking techniques that can be used.
In addition to having taken the SAT and scoring in the 99th percentile, I have also taught summer classes for SAT at AIM Academy for 3 summers along with 4 years of SAT one on one tutoring. I feel very comfortable with explaining both the subject material and special test taking techniques throughout the test. I tailor my lessons to help students reach their score goals and will be very frank on how to do so.
