Hi! I'm Maurice W., I am a graduate from Columbia University, Class of 2009, with a major in Economics and a concentration in Mathematics. During my time at CU I was recruited and trained by a test prep company based in Westport, CT. Since 2009 I have tutored hundreds of students across the tri-state area. My students' average score improvement for the SAT and ACT are 300 points and 7 points, respectively. I have worked with students with strengths and weaknesses in each area of this test, so over time I have developed numerous teaching methods for each concept taught for these exams as well as various test taking strategies for students.

I believe students like working with me not just because they see the incremental progress that they make from session from session, but because I always find a way to relate to them. I grew a student athlete, attending 7 or more swimming practices a week on top of academic responsibilities during both high school and college. So, whether I am working with a student individually or a group, I take into account how their schedules are setup so I can create a seamless and stress-free learning experience.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I was formally trained by a company in Greenwich, CT in 2009 and have tutored hundreds of students across the tri-state area ever since. My students' average increase for the SAT and ACT are 300 points and 7 points, respectively.

For the ACT English I begin by providing students a packet of all of the grammar rules they will be tested on. I then walk through the various test-taking and problem-solving strategies for both Mechanical/Usage questions as well as Rhetorical questions. Once we've done a few individual passages together and the student becomes comfortable with the strategies, we then do full ACT English tests timed, which we then review together.

ACT Math

I was formally trained by a company in Greenwich, CT in 2009 and have tutored hundreds of students across the tri-state area ever since. My students' average increase for the SAT and ACT are 300 points and 7 points, respectively.

For the ACT Math I begin by providing students a packet of math concepts and formulas they'll need to review daily so they're memorized by test day. Each math lesson is structured similarly: we review any homework assignments given previously, introduce/discuss a new set of topics, complete practice problems for the new concepts, and then complete partial and complete Math tests at the end of the lesson. This allows me to incrementally add more to the student's workload without them becoming overwhelmed by the material due to a lack of understanding.

ACT Science

I was formally trained by a company in Greenwich, CT in 2009 and have tutored hundreds of students across the tri-state area ever since. My students' average increase for the SAT and ACT are 300 points and 7 points, respectively.

For the ACT Science section I begin by showing students multiple test taking strategies: how to read different types of passages, how to solve graph/chart passages, how to highlight content, and how to eliminate incorrect answer choices. From there we proceed to do numerous problem sets, one by one, together until the student is ready to do entire sections, timed, by themselves (which we review together afterwards).

SAT Math

I'm a graduate of Columbia University Class of 2009 with a major in Economics & concentration (minor) in Mathematics. I was recruited and trained by a company in Greenwich, CT in 2009 and have tutored hundreds of students across the tri-state since. My students' average student improvement SAT/ACT are 300/7 points, respectively.

SAT Reading

I was formally trained by a company in Greenwich, CT in 2009 and have tutored hundreds of students across the tri-state area ever since. My students' average increase for the SAT and ACT are 300 points and 7 points, respectively.

For the SAT Reading I begin by having my students create a Quizlet account (if they do not already have one) so they have a place to store and review their vocabulary words. From there we work on problem-solving strategies for sentence completions. Once the student understands how to study vocabulary over the duration of our lessons and the sentence completion strategies, we move on to cover strategies for long and short passages. For each question type we review multiple example sets together so I can help the student understand the mistakes they're making and correct them along the way.

SAT Writing

I was formally trained by a company in Greenwich, CT in 2009 and have tutored hundreds of students across the tri-state area ever since. My students' average increase for the SAT and ACT are 300 points and 7 points, respectively.

For the SAT Reading I begin by providing students a set of grammar rules (which include sample sentences) so they have a clear understanding of how they are being tested. From there I proceed to show them test-taking and problem-solving strategies for each of the question types: Error identification, sentence correction and paragraph revision.
