Writing can be hard. Doing it alone, when you don't have the right one-on-one help, can make it harder. Whether you need help with the college admission process (essays, strategy, SAT/ACT essay writing, school choice) or writing a high school or college English essay (or a corporate manual, speech or grant proposal), I can make the process easier for you. I understand different thinking styles, and tailor my approach to them whenever possible. My standards are high, but you won't mind; I guarantee some laughter along with a better sense of the written word.

Sessions can take place at my office on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, or, during the summer, in parts of the Hamptons (Remsenberg to Southampton).

I have helped many students find the right fit, "write the right essay," and navigate the admissions process. I have served as a volunteer college admissions counselor in a NYC high school, and as an applicant interviewer, alumni ambassador and college fair representative for an Ivy League University. As a writing expert, I have tutored middle and high school clients, taught freshmen at a local university, and led government executives in deductive writing programs. I have written marketing and publicity copy for a major retailer, speeches for a CEO, grant proposals for non-profit organizations, and meta-analyses of public policy for state and local government.

My education: B.A. in English from Cornell University and Masters degree from Columbia University.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

Lisa has served as a volunteer college guidance counselor for a NYC high school, helping juniors and seniors in the application process. She has been an admissions ambassador for an Ivy League university for over 5 years, interviewing applicants and representing the university at college fairs. Lisa is an expert writer and teacher of writing (as a corporate trainer, private writing tutor and college adjunct professor) and has guided many high school seniors in the successful crafting of their college application essays and in the entire application process (e.g. choosing schools, coordinating college visits, etc.). She is a member of the American College Counseling Association.

English

I am a private tutor and have taught freshman composition as an adjunct professor in a university. I have also taught deductive writing to government executives, and am a researcher, analyst and editor with extensive experience. I understand the kind of writing that is prized in the corporate setting (clear, concise, to the point), and in the academic as well.

Grammar

I am a private tutor and have taught freshman composition as an adjunct professor in a university. I have also taught deductive writing to government executives, and am a researcher, analyst and editor with extensive experience. I understand the kind of writing that is prized in the corporate setting (clear, concise, to the point), and in the academic as well. Grammar is distinctly important to good writing; those who do not heed its rules will be misunderstood, and often judged as incompetent writers and thinkers.

SAT Writing

There are strategies one can use to improve SAT English scores, and I can help you ascertain which ones you need to use. I can help you see which areas are your challenges, and focus on improving your scores in those areas. In particular, I have graded the essay portions of standardized tests and know what is required.

Writing

I am a private tutor and have taught freshman composition as an adjunct professor in a university. I have also taught deductive writing to government executives, and am a researcher, analyst and editor with extensive experience in all sectors. As a result, I understand the kind of writing that is prized in the corporate setting (clear, concise, to the point), and in the government and academic as well. One who writes well can think well; not everyone who thinks well can write well. Your writing reveals much about your thinking; improve it and see greater success in various areas of life.

Great tutor who really cares about your success! — I was having a lot of trouble with one of my NYU expository writing classes and I consulted Ms. K for help. She is one of the best tutors available for you. She helped me outline my new essays and was always available to bounce ideas off of, whether by telephone or by email. After I rewrote my essay, she then proceeded to meticulously double check the essay for grammar and content, strengthening m ...
