I strive to be the kind of writing and English tutor I would want to work with: seasoned, curious, encouraging, honest, flexible, organized, clear, easy to talk to, fun to work with, attentive to both detail and the big picture, and ready with lessons, tips and inspiration to supplement whatever is happening in your classroom.
The first thing I do is make the task manageable. I know that grammar and the blank white page can be scary, but I'm ready with ways to get you itchy to write and simple examples to help you understand the logic behind the rules of grammar. I will also point out the specific spots in the writing that are and are not successful, explain why, provide examples and suggestions, and send you off focused, hopeful and ready to do your best.
In college I was part of a year-long peer-tutoring program and I won a college-wide writing award. I then became a high-school English teacher and then a writer and editor at many national magazines. I never left my teaching roots. I still love teaching so much that I teach writing in the online program of The Writers Studio and work with many private students on their grammar, expository writing, short stories and essays. I love helping people write more clearly and expressively! I think students respond best when they feel respected and heard and relaxed. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I spent years volunteering in elementary school classrooms, where I helped teach various lessons including knitting (which involved a lot of arithmetic and spatial concepts). I have my certification as a high-school English teacher. I worked with elementary-aged kids for years as a camp counselor. I did extensive research on elementary after-school programs for Scholastic.
With a background as a high-school English teacher, I have helped dozens of students and aspiring writers with their grammar, punctuation and style. I am proud to say I have established a good working relationship with each student and helped many of them publish their first books.
I have taught high-school English, and written and delivered many speeches in my capacity as a PTA executive board member and school leadership team representative. I have also spoken out at large community hearings, and given many public readings of my fiction. In other words, I have overcome my own nerves and uncertainty and have loads of wisdom to share on ways to come across as confident, clear and entertaining.
High-school English teacher, creative writing teacher, tutor for NYC students, longtime elementary-school classroom volunteer, part of an innovative program in the NYC libraries involving kids practicing their reading skills by reading to therapy dogs.
I spent a year of college in an intensive peer-tutoring program that involved teaching a freshman remedial student how to write and how to study, I have taught high-school English and I currently teach writing in an online program. I have also taught the hardest student -- myself. My old methods included severe procrastination followed by locking myself into a room and completing my work at the last minute when enough desperation had built up. Now I approach my projects calmly and thoughtfully, with a plan, a schedule, a calendar, and a lot of faith in my own ability to come through. I would love to help you to do the same.
