Hey, Students! my name is Ben. I am really passionate about my academics, career, soccer, and playing guitar. I graduated with honors from Stevens Institute of Technology, with a B.Sc in Quantitative Finance last spring, and I am now working for TIAA-CREF, a leading asset manager and retirement provider for those in the medical and academic fields, and really enjoying so far! As a tutor, I specialize in K-12 level mathematics, with a focus on SAT math.
I have lived in England for 7 years where I attended school in Henley, and played football (soccer) for the Oxford United Football Academy during my time there. I have passionately played soccer my entire life, and have over 15 years of competitive experience playing all four years at Stevens Tech, advancing to the national championship game in my freshman year, and winning two state cup titles in my high school years for traveling club teams.
Additionally, I have also been an avid acoustic guitar player for over 10 years, I enjoy spreading the joy of music, and instructing beginners.
Students may contact me through WyzAnt.
I have completed a B.Sc in Quantitative Finance, with a minor in Economics, with honors, from the Stevens Institute of Technology. My Business coursework over these 4 years has included Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Calculus, Entrepreneurship, Investment Management, Introduction to Financial Engineering and Derivatives. I have pursued technology startups, namely Delta Financials. A propietary text analysis treatment of aggregated Twitter and social media data being used to determine intelligent investment decisions. I am working at TIAA-CREF, a leading asset manager in Manhattan with the intention of applying to a top 20 MBA program in the coming years.
My experience in dealing with K - 6th age children is deep, and goes back several years. I have spent several weeks of the last 4 summers working at Stevens Institute of Technology's Ducks soccer camp. During my time working at those camps I was placed directly in charge of a team of 15-20 6 - 11 year olds from 8am - 4pm all week. My duties involved designing fun, interactive and engaging training sessions in the mornings and afternoons, entertaining the kids during lunch, and also supervising them in the swimming pool, before seeing that they leave with the appropriate parent or guardian at the days end. I specialize in Elementary math, and have extensive experience in motivating and engaging younger children in this age bracket.
I have played the acoustic guitar for over 10 years, doing covers and writing originals as well. In this time I have used a combination of formal lessons, and online material to become familiar with basic chord progressions, and common scales (pentatonic, major scales). I have played at various coffee shops across Northern New Jersey, and I am now currently playing in New York City. My lessons are cumulative, sequential and simple. I encourage my students to begin with basic scales, and progress through to simple chords and power chords. Music is my passion, and I enjoy a huge variety of styles, however, my favorite players include Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springstein, Incubus, John Frusciante and The Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Foo Fighters.
I have played soccer competitively for over 15 years, spending 7 years in England, where I first learned the game and fell in love with it, at Oxford United Football Academy. I then moved to the United States and competed in the U.S. Soccer academy system before being recruited to play at Stevens Institute of Technology. I played all 4 years there, advancing the NCAA DIII National Championship game as a freshman in 2008. I played in the U.S.L. during my summers, and coached at the Ducks Soccer Camp as well, working with children as young as 5 and as old as 15. Having fun with the beautiful game is my focus, and improving technical ability, athleticism and fitness are really important to me as well.
Having recently completed 4 years at a top engineering school, and having juggled my academics with athletics throughout all 4 of those years, I have not only learned the utter importance of proper time management and efficient study skills, but had these concepts ingrained into my daily habit. Studying subjects that tend to be cumulative in nature (mathematics, and other engineering courses at Stevens Tech,) I have learned the value of staying on top, and ahead of coursework. Time management is also key in my current profession in Financial Services I.T. where I have learned that figuring out which trading systems to prioritize, can make or lose vast sums. Even in my prior experience tutoring with Wyzant, I have learned how to cover the most systematically important material first, with students who are time constrained.
