I have been fortunate to work as a music teacher for the past 10 years and could not think of my life without music! While I specialize in teaching children, I also love working with adults! I have taught piano lessons, both group and private style, to a diverse range of ages and backgrounds. I find it highly important to learn theory and ear training as you go so you wont be blindsided by it later on in your musical development. Thus, I create fun and innovative ways to teach these "music fundamentals" so that it does not seem like a tedious activity! I teach all styles of music: classical, contemporary, musical theater, and some jazz.
In addition to teaching piano I am currently pursuing my masters in music education. In my studies I have learned new ways of teaching the language of music, and I incorporate a lot of improvisational exercises to help strengthen the ear, and become in "tune" (no pun intended) with the music!
I have studied ear training at the Musicians Institute in California, and have also had intense private music instruction for 16 years. I have taught piano, music theory, ear training, and music production to ages ranging from 4 years to 60 years. I had 16 years of private piano lessons, followed by 2 years of professional music training at The Musicians Institute in California.
I am located in the downtown Manhattan area and can travel to you!

Contrary to what some believe, ear training is a skill that can be taught. And while having "perfect pitch" is most times a gift one is born with, training your ear to have relative, or even perfect pitch is absolutely possible! The key (as is with learning any new language) is repetition of the sound. Such as, repeating a major/minor sound until one can recognize the differences between the two in a simple sound such as a door bell ringing, or a note gone "wrong" in a live musical act. I incorporate creative and fun ways of training the ear, such as extensive interval training using your voice and your ears, and improvising in a song that we will jam on together. This way the student can explore the different pitches in a particular key, then learn to transpose the key using the theory practices they will be learning in congruent with the ear training.
I had 16 years of private piano lessons, followed 2 years of professional music training at The Musicians Institute in California. All of which included extensive music theory and ear training education. I have been teaching private piano lessons for 10 years, for levels ranging from beginner to advanced intermediate. I especially am skilled in working with children, as I find creative ways for them to connect with the music, and learn the language in a fun way!
