I have been a classroom teacher in independent and public schools in New York City. Currently, I work individually with children and families. My areas of expertise are prek-4 academics, gifted and talented enrichment and test preparation. I tutor for the OLSAT (public school gifted and talented entrance exam), ERB (ISAAGNY entrance exam), and ELA (public school progress exam). I also tutor emergent academics, prek-4 reading, writing and mathematics and test taking skills. I have extensive knowledge of the public and private school environment in New York City. Phonics is the basis of reading. While there are many skills involved in reading, the sound-symbol correspondence is the most important. Phonics builds on a child's innate facility for language. Phonics must be combined with other methods of reading instruction, including whole language.
I use a variety of methods for teaching phonics: alphabet review, phonemic awareness, Orton-Gillingham devices, and inventive spelling. Children can play games, learn mnemonics, relate pictures to sounds and just have fun with language! Most of all, I encourage children to read any book they can. Of course, I support reading aloud to children. These phonics activities, combined with heavy print exposure, will lead to success in reading.
I have experience working with children who have writing issues, dyslexia, or weak pencil grip. Language development and socialization are also areas of expertise. I work on remedial reading, remedial math and organization/executive management problems. Additionally, I work with advanced students who's "special need" is to be challenged beyond the classroom. Really, every child has "special needs". I am good at spotting what the issue is, and working on precisely the type of skills which will aid the student to overcome deficiencies and gain self-confidence.
Study skills are necessary to succeed in education. I work with students to develop strategies which complement learning style and lifestyle. Topics include time management, work flow and good study habits. I can also work on learning strategies, such as note taking, changing questions into answers, reference skills and getting information from pictures. Reading comprehension and active reading are areas of expertise.
