Music is a cumulative art form: what you learn from the song you are writing or learning is what you bring to the next song you write and learn. My motto and key phrase is 'The art of writing is re-writing.' I give honest, clear and concise evaluations. I am by nature a cheerleader and encouraging. I really want you to learn and to become a great songwriter. My years of experience give me an objective point of view toward the craft and helping you write your song. I very much enjoy working with writers of all levels. And most important, my love for the process is what I share with you.

Ear Training

I taught ear training at the Berklee College of Music for 4 years. I currently teach ear training as part of every private lesson that I give. It is an essential part of all music lessons. I have been teaching ear training for the last 7 years.

Part of the learning process in music is developing the inner ear. This is the mechanism that feels the music inside and can help a player/musician sing it or play it back. If you can't hear it, you can't play it. My method for developing the ear is based on first, discovering what musical elements are giving the student the most difficulty to hear and then creating original exercises that include the problems until they become friendly and part of the student's listening vocabulary.

Songwriting - This course of study is based on the song that the student presents for evaluation. From this song, concepts are learned about songwriting which filter to the next song the student will write. The basic thought is the art of writing is re-writing. In songwriting, the more you do it, the better you get at it. It is also a completely individual art form that explores the original voice of the student.

You can sing and feel inside while playing. We al ...
