I have a Philosophy and Visual Arts double major from Fordham University, and am currently working as an Americorps volunteer at a school and residential community for children with special needs, Camphill Special School. My experience working with children and adults with special needs is very strong. In addition to growing up with an older brother who has Down Syndrome, I have worked in recreational and therapeutic programs for those with developmental disabilities. At Camphill Special School I live with middle-school aged children who have special needs, most of whom are autistic. I also work as a classroom aid for the 9th grade and 3rd grade classes, alternatively.
I am influenced by the Waldorf philosophy as the school is a Waldorf school, as well as curative education. Finding out how to inspire each child and to help them grow is crucial to the work that I have been doing and I hope to continue to do so through tutoring.
The arts, especially the visual arts, are a passion of mine, and I am able to give lessons about drawing and painting, as well as implement creative projects to assist in various fields. I held a Senior Art Exhibition at Fordham University's Lincoln Center gallery last year. I also wrote my Honors Senior Thesis in Philosophy, entitled "Our Embodied Existence: Contemporary Sculpture and the Lived Perspective."
I have experience working with both children and adults with special needs in a variety of different settings.
I have worked with students who have developmental disabilities in the classroom setting as a classroom aide at Camphill Special School Beaver Run, in Glenmoore, PA. I was an aide in both the 3rd grade and 9th grade classrooms.
I also have experience working with children with special needs in home settings and in extracurricular activities. My older brother has a developmental disability, and growing up with him has made me more aware each day of how to be attuned to the way that another person perceives the world.
My strong intuitive sense, patience, and enthusiasm are integral to my experiences I have had working with those who have special needs.
