Business

I have taught Business English to MBA students at Berkeley College and Columbia University. I have always concentrated on a student understanding not only the vocabulary of business but the cultural context of the language. For most students, the challenge is understanding idiomatic English as well as the language of formal business protocol. I have also had a great deal of experience helping students give business presentations

Career Development

Many of my students are fluent in English but unsure how to apply their skills in their careers. I have worked as a business coach, proofreader, and writer for a variety of businesses. I have also taught a combination of ESL and American business etiquette at Columbia University. Currently, I am working with native speakers who want to improve their presentation skills. Students who want to improve their speech and career prospects have found our lessons very helpful.

English

I have taught English for foreign students as well as native speakers. I enjoy explaining and illustrating grammar in an entertaining and clear manner. I also have published 4 books and am very good at helping students improve their writing skills.
If the student is working with English as a foreign language, I am certified in CELTA teaching and use a conversational method.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL for the past 15 years. My students have been from Business, the Arts, and academia. I concentrate on pronunciation, idioms, conversation, and reading/writing if the student needs to prepare for academic work. I have a certificate in CELTA from Cambridge University. I make my conversation classes lively and am equally at home with one on one tutoring or classes

IELTS

I have worked with the IELTS test for over 5 years. There are two major qualifying exams for foreign students: TOEFL and IELTS. IELTS is administered by Cambridge University and that is where I took my CELTA certificate. I am familiar with the format and most of my students have improved their scores after working with me. The speaking part of the test is conducted by an examiner and thus some students prefer to take IELTS rather than TOEFL which records students.

NCLEX

For the past 4 years, I have worked with foreign Nurses to prepare them for the NCLEX test. I am not a nurse but I have mastered the best way to approach the NCLEX test. Most of my work was with students who spoke English as a second language. Their medical/nursing knowledge was good but their language skills were poor. This experience gave me great familiarity with the structure of the test. I would be happy to help any students master the skills needed to pass the test.

Public Speaking

In addition to my work as a tutor/teacher I have taught and coached students in public speaking. I worked professionally in the theatre for 20 years, and am very skilled in voice production, tricks for calming stage fright and memorization. The most important skill to learn for public speaking is good breathing techniques. This will calm jittery nerves, help with articulation, and organizing your thoughts. I look forward to working with you.

Reading

Reading and Reading Comprehension can be two different skills. Most students can read material but understanding the inferences and implications of reading texts is a skill that needs practice I have worked with foreign students as well as native English speakers to improve vocabulary, syntax, grammar constructions, and reading skills. I have taught for 20 years and am familiar with skills to master reading passages, in SAT, GRE, GMAT, and NCLEX tests. I would be happy to teach students at any level.

Speech

I have taught speech at Queens College and in private lessons with my ESL students for the past 15 years. I also had the good fortune to study with Carl Stough who pioneered a method of breathing coordination that results in optimum vocal production. My students all have benefited from this technique. In addition to concentrating on pronunciation, enunciation, and articulation I help students modulate their voices and achieve maximum communication.

Study Skills

Good concentration is the basis for good study skills. I have worked with American as well as foreign students on developing study skills so that they can achieve their goals. While I was a teacher at the Beekman Schoo,l I tutored many young students and before we even got to English, History, or Math, we needed to find the ways to help the student focus. This depends on how the student learns: Linguistic, Logical, Kinesthetic, Musical, Spatial, or interpersonal are all intelligences. Once I find the "way in" to the students' process it is a matter of creating an environment that will be conducive to learning as well as an approach that will seem natural to the student.

My approach is firm but entertaining. I have had success with this approach. My students feel proud that they are achieving good grades and that pride encourages more study and success. I look forward to working with your child.

TOEFL

TOEFL is the standard exam for foreign students. In my career of 15 years' teaching foreign students I have prepared many students for this exam. The most important part of the preparation is understanding exactly what each part of the test requires. We will practice listening, speaking, writing, and reading. Once a student is familiar with the organization of the test it is much easier to achieve a good score.

World History

I was a European and Russian History major and am familiar with World History and a variety of cultural studies.

Writing

I am a published author both in non-fiction and fiction. I have written 4 books. I have also worked with native English speakers as well as foreign students to polish and clarify their writing. Stimulating students to express themselves in writing and develop their vocabulary is one of my favorite aspects in teaching.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
