Hello, welcome, nice to meet you!
I am a dynamic and passionate, multifaceted musician with a diverse background, which includes composition, conducting, teaching (oboe, music theory/aural skills/history), managing an orchestral library and freelance, professional oboe playing in New York City. I am a published author for the International Double Reed Society and have commissioned many new works for the oboe. Faculty - Manhattan School of Music, precollege (Oboe, Theory, Ear-training); Tutor for collegiate level music theory, past students' schools include Mannes, NYU, MSM, Columbia U.
Teaching Style and Philosophy
I am very pleasant and patient. No skill level is turned away; we all have to start somewhere and everyone can learn! I have the ability to distill complex information into a language that can be understood by any skill level. My method of teaching is grounded in the fundamentals, whether we are speaking of playing the oboe, learning theory, history, composition or aural skills. You will learn the techniques necessary to give you the confidence to succeed. I generally ask guided questions so that the learning process comes mostly from within you. I feel this way creates stronger, more capable students who are able to reason out solutions when their tutors cannot be around. Each lesson is tailored to your specific needs; whether it is general improvement, audition/performance preparation, paper writing or general homework.
My teachers have included:
Bert Lucarelli, Ray Still, Jonathan Kelly, Jonathan Blumenfeld, Pat Stenberg
Robert Spano, Louis Lane, Jorma Panula
I look forward to working with you! If you have any question before you start, feel free to ask.
I have extensive compositional experience. I was accepted to the Oberlin Conservatory as a composition major. I am sure that I can help with your compositional needs.
I was trained as a composer and conductor at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, studied ear-training privately with Jonathan Coopersmith (Head of the Aural Skills/Theory Department at the Curtis Institute) and Chris Stone (Mannes College of Music) and have successfully passed the Conductor's Aural Skill entrance exam and Mannes. I will help you with goal directed listening, using aspects of rhythm, meter and pitch to solve the problem.
I am a graduate of both the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and NYU-Steinhardt Performance. At both institutions, I was able to pass out of the history/general music exams. At NYU, I was the theory/aural skills/history tutor. I have a very thorough grasp of Music History and can help you traverse all stylistic periods.
Music theory is essentially the grammar of music. I have taught and tutored all of levels of music theory from the very basics to the most advanced. I am sure that we can solve your theory questions and concerns together.
I am a professional, New York City based, freelance oboist with experience playing concerti, solo recitals, chamber music, orchestral, operatic, broadway musicals, and contemporary music. I have studied with Bert Lucarelli (International soloist), Ray Still (Chicago Symphony), Nathan Hughes (MET Orchestra), and Jonathan Blumenfeld (Philadelphia Orchestra).
My method of teaching is grounded in the fundamentals of technique, breath control, and reed making giving the student the very best education possible. Each lesson is tailored to the student's specific needs, whether it is general improvement, audition or performance preparation.
I have nearly ten years of private oboe teaching experience and was a member of several community music schools in the greater Philadelphia area before moving to New York.
