Teaching Style and Philosophy
I am very pleasant and patient. No skill level is turned away; we all have to start somewhere and everyone can learn! I have the ability to distill complex information into a language that can be understood by any skill level. My method of teaching is grounded in the fundamentals, whether we are speaking of playing the oboe, learning theory, history, composition or aural skills. You will learn the techniques necessary to give you the confidence to succeed. I generally ask guided questions so that the learning process comes mostly from within you. I feel this way creates stronger, more capable students who are able to reason out solutions when their tutors cannot be around. Each lesson is tailored to your specific needs; whether it is general improvement, audition/performance preparation, paper writing or general homework.

I was trained as a composer and conductor at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, studied ear-training privately with Jonathan Coopersmith (Head of the Aural Skills/Theory Department at the Curtis Institute) and Chris Stone (Mannes College of Music) and have successfully passed the Conductor's Aural Skill entrance exam and Mannes. I will help you with goal directed listening, using aspects of rhythm, meter and pitch to solve the problem.
I am a graduate of both the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and NYU-Steinhardt Performance. At both institutions, I was able to pass out of the history/general music exams. At NYU, I was the theory/aural skills/history tutor. I have a very thorough grasp of Music History and can help you traverse all stylistic periods.
