I have extensive experience with students aged pre-Kindergarten through adult. I have four years of teaching and tutoring experience, including work in NYCDOE schools as well as a year each teaching in Chile and in Colombia (where I perfected my own Spanish). I have also worked with students with learning disabilities and social-emotional difficulties. As an undergraduate, I worked as a peer writing tutor, earning College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification. I also have experience in ESL instruction, both in tutoring and teaching small adult classes. During my last two years of high school, I tutored seventh and eighth grade students in math, writing, science, and study skills.
My tutoring builds on years of diligent work towards my own academic success. I graduated magna cum laude from Smith College with a double major in Government and Spanish, earning me admission into Phi Beta Kappa (GPA 3.9/4.0). In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
For three years, I have worked with elementary-aged students in schools: as an ESL teacher, as an Inclusion Specialist, and as a math teacher. I am currently working as a classroom assistant in a 2nd grade classroom as I pursue NY state certification in Elementary Education as part of my M.A. As an undergraduate, I also spent years tutoring and in an after-school program with elementary students.
I have worked in a residential treatment center for children with social-emotional disabilities, as well as as an Inclusion Specialist for struggling children. In both settings, I found creative strategies to engage children with a variety of special needs in the content and to adapt instruction to meet their needs. As an undergraduate, I also completed coursework on children with disabilities.
As a student myself, now at the graduate level, I have excellent study skills. Over the years, I have worked with several elementary and high school students to develop their own study skills, including prioritizing, keeping a schedule, writing and reviewing drafts, studying for tests, and other skills as fit the particular student. I believe that for many students, teaching study skills is more effective than only tutoring in academic content, as it allows students to ultimately become more self-sufficient.
