English

As a much published writer and experienced editor, in addition to being a constant speaker of English and a reader of its literature, I have a long and rich relationship with the language. I love to work with its written form as well as teach others how to speak it correctly. I've taught students how to write, speak and read English for well over 20 years and get enormous satisfaction from seeing the pleasure they get as they become skilled and fluent in the language.

ESL/ESOL

I'm a certified ESL teacher. As such I have had the satisfaction of watching my students' confidence grow exponentially as they develop fluency in English. I work intensively with college students who must learn accurate English to write their papers and participate in class discussions. I also teach professionals whose work requires them to know the language.

In addition, I work with beginners who need to learn how to hold basic conversations, understand television and films, and, eventually, read periodicals and books. Soon they are no longer isolated by their inability to speak English and a new world opens to them.

Literature

I teach students the literary elements that show them how characterization, conflict, setting, and point of view combine to make a work of literature. Students learn to see the connections between literature and their own experiences and knowledge, and how these can be applied to almost any task they are asked to perform.

Proofreading

Through years of experience, first as a researcher at Newsweek, then as a copy editor, and subsequently as an editor and writer, I've developed a quick eye for errors in spelling, grammar and usage.

Public Speaking

I teach the difference between the written and spoken word. Becoming proficient at each demands a different skill set which I help students master. In addition, to speech-making, my students learn how to address assembled spectators when they're part of a forum and how to answer questions in front of an audience. I help students conquer stage fright and impart important tips for television appearances.

Reading

Students learn to distinguish essential points from the non essential material in order to grasp the meaning of a text. They also learn the importance of context and understanding vocabulary. I work closely with students, tailoring my teaching to their individual needs. I'm always available to answer questions between sessions.

Spelling

My students learn the rules governing the placement of vowels, consonants and certain combinations (like "kn" and "gh") which can make English so confounding. Together we also work on the pronunciation of words because that is key to grasping how to spell them.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is a basic tool of a professional writer -- as basic as a hammer is to a carpenter. Many years of writing for publication, as well as editing the work of others, have given me a broad vocabulary that is essential for language fluency.

Writing

I’ve taught the craft of writing for over 20 years. My students learn to paragraph, how to write topic sentences, how to choose and use supporting details, and how to find the right voice. An increased vocabulary and a better understanding of grammar all come out of this process.

My own writings have appeared in The Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times Book Review, Connoisseur, Newsweek, Town & Country and Longevity, among many other publications. This extensive and varied experience has given me fluency in virtually every form of writing from essays, to criticism, to features, as well as non-profit reports, grant proposals and blogs. Currently I have a novel in the works.

It's a pleasure to give my students the benefit of this rich background, and especially to see their delight as they develop writing and language skills they didn't know they had. Often they also find an improvement in their grades.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
