I am a graduate of Stuyvesant High School and Columbia University with a B.A. in Biophysics and a concentration in pre-medical sciences. I am currently pursuing a doctorate M.D. degree at Northwestern University. Over the past few years, I have tutored many students in the subjects of college mathematics
, and verbal. I have focused both on tutoring class subjects as well as preparing students for PSAT
standardized tests. I have also taught several intensive preparation classes for the SHSAT (Specialized High School Admissions Test). In addition to maths
and sciences, I have also trained two graduate students in MATLAB programming
. My other interests include tennis
, astrophotography, and general photography
I have been tutoring students for approximately eight years now in the subjects mentioned above. My method of teaching can be broken down to just one word - fundamentals. The fundamentals of each subject are crucial, invaluable, necessary, and vital for understanding the subject. Without a strong grasp of the core principles, the beauty of the subject matter goes unnoticed... and without an appreciation of the beauty of the concept, we fail to learn the concept in itself. I appreciate a guided tutoring approach which focuses on making sure the student understands the concepts presented in each question. Anyone can get a question right - but getting the concept right is a far more difficult task.
Practically speaking, I let the student explore the subject and teach me what they know first. Then I present a thorough content-review making sure to ask questions to keep the student engaged. Finally, I present various application questions so we can determine what we need to focus on next. I also really like to ask challenging conceptual questions to see if the student can get at those "AHA" moments that we all thrive for in the field of mathematics and science
because in the end... this stuff is cool no matter how challenging. Students like working with me because I am very easy to approach and can relate to them. I am not too far removed from my high school days and can easily relate to the coursework, the homeworks, the stressors of high school and college, extracurriculars, and everything else that defines the teenage and young-adult years.
