American History

While I am certified to teach in many areas, History is my one true love! I have a passion for history and an ability to make in INTERESTING rather than BORING!

Bible Studies

I have a Bachelors Degree in Theology and spent 25 years teaching Bible and religious classes.

I also have over 80 hours of work on a Master of Divinity degree at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. I have numerous hours of study and tutoring in both Biblical Hebrew and Biblical Greek.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified teacher for many subjects in grades 4 through 12. I have many years of experience teaching students of all ages.

Elementary Math

I struggled with math all the way through elementary school and middle school. That is why I relate very well to the students who need extra assistance in this area. I have been very successful in using my experiences to help many students succeed in math.

Elementary Science

I am certified to teach Science for students in 4th through 8th grades. I am also well versed in the lower grades of science. I have a knack for making subjects that some students find boring much more interesting.

English

I am certified to teach English for grades 4 through 8. I am an excellent resource for the lower and upper grades as well. I am an avid reader and I love to write as well. I have written and edited professionally.

ESL/ESOL

I have earned the TESOL Certification for teaching ESL. I have taught ESL to numerous students from elementary ages all the way into senior adulthood. I have been very successful helping these students in all the areas of communication, including reading, writing, speaking, and proper pronunciation.

European History

While I am certified to teach in many areas, History is my one true love! I have a passion for history and an ability to make in INTERESTING rather than BORING! For European history in particular, I have done extra study in both World War I and World War II, as well as concentrating on the various European Monarchs and their relationships. I am also fully versed in church history, much of which is particularly related to European history.

GED

I have successfully helped numerous students complete their GED over the years. I know how to give the right encouragement as well as testing techniques that will work. When a student approaches the test with confidence, great things can happen!

Government & Politics

I love the U.S. Constitution! I keep a pocket sized copy close by at all times. I am also a political junkie, avidly reading the political news of the day from a great variety of web sites. If you have a need in U.S. Government and Politics, I can help!

Grammar

I am certified to teach English for grades 4 through 8. I am an excellent resource for grammar from the lower grades through high school.

Literature

I am an avid reader and I absolutely love great literature. I am a Shakespeare-lover, and I have successfully taught Shakespeare to many students for both literary purposes as well as the stage. Other favorites of mine: JRR Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, A.A. Milne, E. R. Burroughs, Charles Dickens, and Mark Twain.

Philosophy

I absolutely HATED my first philosophy class in college. Then I retook the class with a different professor, and the world of philosophy changed for me. I am an amateur philosopher, and I love teaching and discussing a variety of ideas. My favorite philosophies to study are Existentialism and Buddhism, and I enjoy discussing many more.

Prealgebra

I struggled with math all the way through elementary school and middle school. That is why I relate very well to the students who need extra assistance in this area. Pre-algebra is one of my favorite subjects to tutor since this is where I turned a corner in my own math path. I have a unique ability to relate to the student who is struggling with pre-algebra.

Proofreading

I am an excellent writer and proofreader. I have worked professionally as both, and I can definitely help students in this area.

Public Speaking

I hold a certification in Speech for 7th to 12th grades. I have over 30 years' experience in public speaking, including churches, contests, rallies, weddings, funerals, etc.

Reading

I am certified to teach reading for grades 4 through 8, and I am an excellent resource for all grade levels. I love to read and would cherish the opportunity to kindle that fire in more students.

Regents

I am a certified Gifted and Talented teacher. I have taken many extra courses to make certain that I know how to teach students the academic material that is covered on the Regents tests. I also specialize in teaching students to prepare themselves for a test and HOW to successfully take tests. I have numerous study aids for each of the Regents tests, and I know exactly how to implement them.

Religion

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Theology and 25 years of experience teaching Bible and religion.

Social Studies

I am certified to teach social studies in grades 4 through 8, and history in grades 4 through 12. I am thoroughly versed in the social sciences and greatly enjoy teaching them to students of all levels.

Speech

I am certified to teach Speech in grades 7 through 12. I have extensive life experience in public speaking and mentoring young speakers.

I have worked with many students over the years to improve both their speaking style and their confidence. I believe that nothing is better than confidence, and nothing creates confidence better than the ability to speak clearly.

Spelling

I am a great speller with many "tricks" up my sleeve for those hard to learn and irregular words. I am certified to teach English/Reading for grades 4 through 8, and I am also a great resource for other grades.

Study Skills

As a certified teacher I have many study skill "tricks" up my sleeves! I am a great resource for students who want to learn to study better.

I am very good at helping students compartmentalize the areas of study they need to improve. By breaking the larger pieces into smaller chunks, I can lead a student to succeed.

Theatre

I am a professional actor (part time). I have been a stage performer for over 30 years. I have taught students theater/drama both as a volunteer and a professional for over 30 years. Last year I was co-director for a middle school one act play production that won first place in two separate contests.

Vocabulary

I have an excellent vocabulary and believe in building my vocabulary everyday. I am certified to teach English for grades 4 through 8, and am an excellent resource for other grades as well.

World History

In regard to world history, I especially enjoy digging into those world-shaping major events from the ancient eras. World conflicts are of special interest to me, from Greek and Roman conquests through the Crusades and on to the more modern World Wars.

Writing

I enjoy writing everything from sports stories to short stories to plays. I have worked professionally as a writer. I am certified to teach English for grades 4 through 8, and am also a great resource for the other grades.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
