Dear Students:

I would like to help you achieve your academic or professional goals. My students describe me as intelligent but profoundly helpful, focused but very down to earth.

I have tutored students of a wide range of abilities and backgrounds for many years. I have taught for over 15 years at the college and professional level. I hold an Associate Degree in Architectural Drafting and Design, an MFA in Creative Writing, and PhD in English.

My tutoring sessions enhance students’ problem solving and brainstorming skills, as well as public speaking and presentation skills, with emphasis on argumentative prose writing. However, I can also help you with your professional, business and marketing writing. I can help you write cover letters, college applications, and letters of intention.

The goal is to prepare my students not only for success in academic writing but also for an understanding of the public and professional "real" world conversation that is happening beyond school.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I'm fluent in English. I was born and raised in the US. I teach in the English Department at Baruch College.

ESL/ESOL

I'm an experienced English instructor. I enjoy working with ESL students because I use student-centered activities that prepare students for an American English Speaking classroom. Likewise, I've studied how the brain retains information. Language learning is natural for children and older students alike, and my methods are both educational and enjoyable.

Marketing

I teach the subject of marketing via Teaching with Blogs at Baruch in the Communication department and the English Department at Baruch. I teach problem solving courses to continuing ed students at Hunter College. I also am a founding member of marketing and business guru Seth Godin's Triiibes since 2008.

Public Speaking

I have taught at the college level and one-on-one the subject of public speaking.

Theatre

Theater credits include:

*One of the original co-creators and cast members of Theatre de la Jeune Lune’s production of Yang Zen Froggs’ Moon Over a Hong Kong Sweatshop
*The new waitress in The Kitchen by Arnold Wesker
*The acrobat in Lulu by Frank Wedekind

Dance credits include:

It Had To Be You, Antiques Minnesota Ballroom, Laurie Van Wieren Dancer’s, the B-Specifics (performance and film version)

She studied with Richard Pinter as a private class student for two years and was a founding member of an improvisation group on the Lower East Side of New York City. The group performed improv games based on the work of Viola Spolin and Paul Sills, using the suggestions of a live audience, with her husband, Robert Vellani.
