ESL/ESOL

The area of tutoring English as a second language (ESL) involves teaching and aiding the student in all aspects of the English language, including reading, writing, and conversational use. An ESL student's primary native language is one other than English and usually seeks additional tutelage to further understand other material that utilizes the English language. Depending on what each student's native language is, tutoring ESL may have varied paces. Students whose native tongue is a romance language will often have the easiest time in picking up English due to the languages' similarities, whereas students whose native languages are not among the category of romance languages may find more difficulty in reaching proficiency with English.

I have previously tutored ESL students in the areas of reading, writing, and particularly the conversational facet. The students I've tutored in this subject were mostly international college students who needed some help with their English to supplement their college education. However, on a few occasions, I've also tutored elementary ESL students whose parents are recent immigrants to the country (these occasions were mostly voluntary and unpaid).

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
