'Active learners' learn more, remember more and recall more than 'passive learners'

When given a task, 'active learners' can quickly figure out what they are being asked to do.
When working through a task, 'active learners' can break down tasks into smaller steps.
When the deadline arrives to complete a task, 'active learners' hand in the task on time.
And most important, 'active learners' know how to ask questions when they are not sure what to do.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have three wonderful decades of experiences with the New York City Department of Education teaching as a Special Education - LD, MR - Teacher, Resource/Behavior Teacher, Supervisor, Staff Developer, Reading Specialist and Educational Evaluator for academically at-risk students (K-8).
A language arts approach to learning all subjects enables my students to develop focused listening, purposeful speaking, comprehensive reading and organized writing.

Assessment-driven instruction enables my students to understand what they have learned and what still needs practice and review. Lesson plans and homework for each lesson provide a road map for myself and for my students and for their caregivers.

ESL/ESOL

In addition to intensive instruction in reading, writing listening ad speaking, my students learn to be more comfortable with the English language through literature, news events and social culture. Thirty years of work experience includes the NYC Department of Education, SUNY colleges and Manhattan's International Center.

Phonics

I have three wonderful decades of experience with the New York City Department of Education teaching Special Education K-8 students in all subjects, including reading. Using a phonetic reading approach, I teach non-readers to learn to read. Using a comprehension reading approach, I teach new readers to read to learn.

I constantly assess my students’ learning to know which skills the students have mastered and which skills require remediation. I prepare lesson plans and homework for each lesson so that the students and the caregivers and I know what to expect.

Special Needs

I have three wonderful decades of experience with the New York City Department of Education teaching as a Special Education - LD, MR - Teacher, Resource/Behavior Teacher, Supervisor, Staff Developer, Reading Specialist and Educational Evaluator for academically challenged students (K-8). My summer professional background includes younger years as a day-camp and sleep-away-camp counselor for cognitively and emotionally challenged campers. My academic background includes a BS in General and Special Education, an MS in Special Education for the Mentally Disabled and an MS in Educational Supervision.

A fun, experiential and multi-sensory approach enables my students to learn from experience and apply what they have learned to their next experience. Assessment-driven instruction enables me to learn what they have learned and what still needs practice. Lesson plans and homework for each lesson provide a road map for myself, my students and their caregivers.

Study Skills

As an New York City Public School Education Evaluator for academically at-risk students the evaluations most often expose a student's weak organization and study skills to be a main culprit in any lack of academic progress.

Organization and study skills, regardless of the age, grade or subject matter, can be taught through 'active learning'. When given a task, 'active learners' can quickly figure out what they are being asked to do. When working through a task, 'active learners' can break down tasks into smaller steps. When the deadline arrives to complete a task, 'active learners' deliver the task on time. And most important, 'active learners' know how to ask questions when they are not sure what to do. ???Work with this experienced, caring, fun NYC Education Evaluator and become an organized, active learner.
