I am a former book and magazine editor, New York state certified teacher in social studies, and freelance writer.

Communication of knowledge does not begin with typing. It starts with a process of the mind. The key is understanding the subject, and conceiving the question a reader needs answered even if he or she does not yet know to ask it. The basics are true with standardized tests and real world communication, including "the college essay."

Make sure you are filling in the correct circle on a standardized test; refine an essay to the point where it says exactly what you want; send a complaint letter that will get a result; begin the novel you've only imagined; or create new career possibilities. Execution is more than proper spelling and grammatical awareness. Achieving your goal requires a combination of organization, research, word choice, and bringing to the blank page that confronts you the apt idea in a manner that will apply, appeal and satisfy your audience.

Whether you wish to prepare for SATs, or improve particular writing, English or history skills, let's figure out what you want to achieve and work together until you do it.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I am a New York State certified teacher of social studies for grades 5-12. Relevant graduate work was done at both the CUNY Graduate Center and Manhattanville College.

English

My undergraduate degree at Columbia was in English. I have been a book and magazine editor. My freelance writing has run the gamut from general interest to literary profile to sports journalism. My experience with writers has included helping the very young to professionals.

Literature

My undergraduate degree at Columbia was in English. I have been a book and magazine editor. Graduate work was in American Studies, before I went on to receive an MA in teaching from Manhattanville. My freelance writing has run the gamut from general interest to literary profile to sports journalism.

Social Studies

I am a New York State certified teacher of social studies grades 5-12. I also completed a master's degree in teaching at Manhattanville College. I look forward to working with you or your student.

Study Skills

The key to good study skills is to find the resonance and relevance between the subject and the student. In my own pursuit of education and in work with students as a NY state certified teacher it is clear that anyone can cram data into their head that may or may not stay as long as an upcoming test. My goal in helping to improve study skills (by improving focus, note-taking, and time management) is to help students recognize that what they gain from timely preparation and active participation in their education is of much greater value to them than all the things they fear and think they dislike about the action of learning outside the classroom.
