Spanish is my native language. I have always been in love with language. Ever since I was a student in my homeland Peru, I set up to study Sciences of Communication with a major in Journalism in College. As I finished the career in Peru I took classes of British English for six months before deciding to come to the United States. I enrolled in York College and immediately looked for ways to contact students to tutor. I started teaching Spanish literature to College students on Saturdays. It was a wonderful experience, I may say. My following years found me already matriculated in Hunter College as a Master Spanish literature student. I, again, was faced with the challenges of tutoring Spanish and I did. I taught Spanish to college students twice a week in the evenings right after my own session. And again, the experience was so fulfilling.

Along with with my duties as a tutor at Hunter, I decided to join Literacy Partners the rest of my evenings. I taught remedial classes for underprivileged populations. I remember one particular girl that refused to attend classes but I made her change her mind with a lot of persuasion. It felt so great!

At present, I am involved at work at the Board of Education with children of all ages. I communicate closely with parents over the phone and talk to students in my office hours. I sit with parents and school staff to discuss objectives about students' progress in school and design plans to implement.

I finished the master program at Hunter with a 3.76 gpa and proceeded to enroll at the Graduate Center for the Doctorate program. I excelled in all fields of study and completed entire coursework over the 45 credits with a 3.40 gpa. I will be receiving the degree of Doctor of Philosophy as soon as I complete a thesis.
I firmly believe that all students, adults and children, learn any language more actively when exposed to a variety of activities within the classroom that replicate the real world. Students respond to lessons more positively when the teacher supports their grammar lessons with the display of actual activities designed to involve students. In other words, if a teacher wants the student to learn the word "door" in Spanish, the teacher has to mimic a situation from the real world that will engage the student in participating in the action. I learned a long time ago that when we use the blackboard exclusively for a lesson, we are only making use of memorization to retain information; however, if we act out a situation that relates to the real world, we are not just memorizing the lesson but internalizing a series of vital functions that replicate the milestones of child development. A child learns by imitating an action and adults, as well!

I have certification to teach English as a second language. I was matriculated in a reputable British School for six months in Peru several years ago. Ever since my years as a student, I have taught English and English as a Second Language (ESL)to a variety of students from all over the world. Already in college, along with my studies of Ibero-American Literature, I was tutoring English to International students and newcomers to the USA. Alongside,I would compliment my tutoring in the school with private lessons at client's homes. I am bilingual and thus, English and Spanish come easy to me. Most of my students are spanish speaking individuals who have limited command of the English language. I use the advantage of knowing Spanish to help them with some translation exercises and cultural comprehension as well. I have studied myself the English language for as many as thirty years in schools in Peru and the United States. I have studied ESL at York College for three consecutive semesters, I have studied it at YMCA for half a year,I have taken courses of ESL at the Union Headquarters of District 37 for as many as four years. I continue teaching and tutoring English at my present School, The Graduate Center. Many a few Doctorate students who major in Spanish benefit from my tutoring sessions on weekdays evenings and weekends. With all the aforesaid, I have assurance that numbers of English learners will be rewarded with my expertise on a face-to-face basis. I have developed a technique of a rapid immersion into the target language. I use context to convey meaning in every lesson. I believe that content is important in the teaching of a language and content is a powerful means in the teaching of grammar. Years of teaching individually a second language is always challenging but rewarding as well. As I said, I have spent years of exciting learning and teaching English at various Language Schools in New York. I learnt that students of English have different needs when learning a second language. As a result I teach English aiming at students who are newcomers in the United States. I understand their concerns about acquiring the necessary tools to function fully in a country where English is spoken widely and, therefore, get them totally immersed in the English language in order to use it in situations of real life. The student is made to understand that English is a means of communication in every field imaginable as it is the language of commerce, is the language of education, etc. As a result, I take teaching as an opportunity to provide students from various countries with lessons based on a specific situation where English is not spoken. My methodology recognizes that any individual has particular needs as well as general ones. I approach students by taking into consideration what his particular needs are at any given moment. I have to consider facts as what difficulties a student faces in the study of English: does his difficulties arise as a result of the degree to which his native language differs from English? Another aspect is about Spanish speaking students: how advantageous is the fact that some Spanish words share a similar spelling as English but are pronounced differently? I am a tutor who take into consideration these premises before designing a lesson: catering to the specifics needs of a particular student.
