If you're ready to have a fun, educational, and enriching experience come study with me! I've played with some of the greatest musicians on the planet, based on this experience I can pass the knowledge and the know how on to you. I specialize in jazz music, the baritone saxophone being my primary instrument, but I also teach flute, piano, theory, and ear training. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have been composing music for over the last 15 years. I have one CD out as a leader, "Blueprint," that features 10 of my original songs. I encourage students to compose using their own instrument since it allows them to use the best range and timbre to compose a melody.

Ear Training

I like to use transcription as a way to teach ear training. Transcription is listening to a melodic or rhythmic passage and figuring out what it is. You can "transcribe" either on your instrument or write it down. I prefer to have students to play it on their instrument first, then write it down for analysis. If you play it on your instrument first, you will retain the melody for a very long time as opposed to writing it down first, then learning it. I can teach how to do it either way.

Flute

I have been playing the flute for over 15 years. Some of my experience includes performances with the Mingus Epitaph Orchestra and Brian Charette's Sextet, and numerous recordings. We can work on everything from classical to jazz, or whatever your style preference is!

Music Theory

Music Theory includes learning all 12 major scales, how to construct a major scale, and the modes of the major scale. Chord study, different types of chords, how to construct a triad, seventh chords, and eventually how to construct chords with "upper structures". Once all the major scales are learned, we will get into the minor scales and the different types. Also, a bit of ear training will be incorporated into the theory class.

Piano

Piano was my first instrument, and was classically trained for over 10 years. I can teach beginner to intermediate students. Students will learn proper technique on hand/finger positioning/cross over/under, how to play scales, and learn music using any kind of method/song book of their choosing at the appropriate level.

Saxophone

I have been playing the saxophone for over 20 years, and have a bachelor of music degree from the music conservatory Manhattan School of Music, specializing in jazz performance. I have one CD out as a bandleader, "Blueprint," and am an active sideman playing in groups such as the Mingus Big Band, the Bjorkestra, and the New Directions ensemble. I like to work first on the fundamentals of saxophone, emboucher, tone, technique, and then work on material. Any type of music the student would like to learn!
