American History

I love to teach history, and have read a great deal on the American Revolution and Abraham Lincoln's presidency. These two events deeply shaped our country and still affect us today. I have also studied Economic History as well.

Ear Training

What is ear training? When the ear is trained for music, one can listen to a pitch or a series of pitches and imitate them by voice or with an instrument. An important aspect of ear training is recognizing different pitches. I typically use a guitar to help the student recognize different pitches. Rhythm and tempo are other important aspects to ear training. I use a series of clapping or walking exercises to help the student with rhythm and tempo.

I have sung over 25 leading operatic roles both in the US and in Europe. I have sung at Cologne Opera, Zurich Opera, Carnegie Hall, Glimmerglass Opera, and many other theaters. I have sung roles of Mephisto, Wotan, Pizzaro, Escamillo among many others. So I know how to learn and memorize lots of music in a jiffy!

I teach students starting at age 9 and up. I have taught students ear training and even musical style for the last ten years. I have taught for the last 10 years on a private basis both here in the US and in Europe.

Government & Politics

When it comes to governing and governance in a society of laws like ours, the details are what counts. Knowing the ins and outs of the law and our constitution is a civic duty.

Microsoft Excel

I love to show students how flexible excel really is. It is an amazing program.
Using the "sum" sign is just the tip of the iceberg.

Music Theory

An understanding of musical notation gives the musician another way to express his or her talents. There are musicians who play by "ear," but an understanding of music theory and notation will add another type of language to the musician's "toolbox."

Reading

Understanding the tone and the intent of the author is as important as understanding each word. When we understand the tone and intent of the author, we as readers will have an emotional as well as intellectual impression of the author's work. This assumes, of course, that the author is clear in his/her writing.

Voice (Music)

In my studio, you will enjoy learning how to sing. It always brings me joy when I see a student improving. I teach a series of relaxing yet exacting deep breathing exercises which help the student properly support the voice using their diaphragm. I will also look to see if the student has any unneeded jaw or tongue tension, which can adversely affect vocal resonance. There are exercises which can alleviate this problem. Learning to sing in an open, free and relaxed manner is important for long-term vocal health. And furthermore, a good technique will increase the student's chances of having a beautiful voice.

I have sung over 25 leading operatic roles both in the US and in Europe. I have sung at Cologne Opera, Zurich Opera, Carnegie Hall, Glimmerglass Opera, and many other theaters. Roles performed: Mephisto, Wotan, Pizzaro, Escamillo among many others.

I have taught privately for the last 10 years both in Europe and here in the United States. I teach both male and female singers starting at 14 years and up.

Writing

Writing prose is both an art and a science. The writer creates a great variety of sentences within a certain grammatical framework. I would love to help those students who are looking to improve their skills.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
