ESL/ESOL

I have experience of over 25 years in teaching ESL at universities in New York (Baruch, Hunter, BMCC, LaGuardia) and abroad. I taught conversation (oral communication), vocabulary building, grammar, reading and pronunciation. I also taught academic writing (which included grammar, punctuation and self-editing strategies). I received a certificate in ESL from a two-year work-study program in Madrid, Spain, where I lived and worked for almost eight years. I am also a three-time award-winning journalist (NY Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest), so I not only have expertise in teaching writing, but I also know how to be a successful writer - and I can make you successful as well!

Writing

I taught academic writing at Baruch and Hunter for many years. That comprised of teaching how to write full essays on a wide range of topics, plus warm-up writing activities. My course also emphasized grammar, punctuation and self-editing techniques. I also taught CLIP at BMCC - how to write a well-organized argument. In addition, I am a three-time award-winning journalist (NY Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest), so I not only know how to teach writing, but I am also successful at it. And I can make you successful as well.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
