I am a Nonfiction Writing MFA candidate at the New School for Public Engagement. I graduated from Skidmore College with a BFA in both English and Classics. I received the Helga Doblin Prize, awarded to a senior classics major who has demonstrated academic excellence in ancient languages and literature as well as classical civilization. I also earned departmental honors in Classics and English while graduating summa cum laude, which requires maintaining a 3.8 GPA.
I have a passion for both subjects and I am eager to teach and grow with my students. I have particularly strong editing skills, with an eye for detail as well as the ability to recognize organizational issues in a piece. I also have in depth experience workshopping creative writing and essays, including attending the New York State Summer Writers Institute where I studied with authors Philip Lopate and Jim Miller.
I am well versed in Latin, having studied Catullus, Horace, Ovid, Virgil, Suetonius, and Cicero among other great Roman authors. I gained hands on experience when I studied abroad in Rome for a semester at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies, run by Duke University. I also worked on an archaeological dig at the Roman Villa of Poggio del Molino in Tuscany in 2011. I have twice presented original scholarship at the Parilia conference held by Union college, Colgate University, Hamilton College, and Skidmore College.
I understand that everyone prefers to learn in their own specific way and I am very open to adapting my tutoring style to meet the needs of the student. I have experience working with middle school through college age adolescents as well as adults.
