After working in the publishing industry for over 30 years, I want to switch gears from working at a desk, behind a computer screen, to sharing my knowledge with others, in person.

During the course of my years in publishing, I was a manager in magazine and college textbook production. As part of my daily routine I taught beginners and experienced workers the ins and outs of the production process, and specific elements of the software that we used in production. This includes layout software such as Adobe InDesign.

My teaching style is relaxed and patient. I always ask the student what he or she knows before I give them instruction. Very often students will find that they have some of the knowledge that they seek, but they need someone to help them discover it and organize it. Once that is done, we can add to that knowledge together.

I can give lessons at my midtown Manhattan apartment, or at any convenient location that you would like to arrange. (Manhattan preferred, but I will travel to the other boroughs if necessary.)

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe InDesign

I have been using InDesign since 2003 for the production of college-level textbooks. For several years I was a production manager, and as part of my job I taught staff and freelancers how to use InDesign to flow in text, lay out pages, place art, etc.

My own responsibilities included print-production templates in InDesign. This included creating paragraph and character style sheets, master pages, etc.
