I've been teaching New York City high school students for the past 10 years. The population that I've been working with has been challenging. As a result however, I've developed several strategies to reach different type of learners. By relating topics that I'm teaching to things that are familiar to students' day-to-day experiences, I'm able to communicate complex aspects of many scientific topics. Given one-on-one time with any student, I can communicate the things he or she needs to understand for their coursework as long as they are willing to do their part as a student and work as well. Joel is very bright and has great expertise in the material. He has a calm approach and was able to get difficult concepts across to my son. His grade clearly improved based on these sessions. Joel was highly dependable and very responsive. He answered email/text questions very promptly and was flexible when we needed to change times.
Joel was an excellent tutor in living environment for my daughter. He was knowledgeable and patient. I recommend him highly.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've been teaching astronomy 2 of the last 3 years at the high school level. I stress the development of astronomy from ancient times up to modern times in what I call historical astronomy. After this, I go into the stars, planets, moons, galaxies and universe itself in what I call physical astronomy.
