Hello there! My name is Isaac, and I have taught students of all ages and levels (elementary school through adult). While my main focus is tutoring chess, I also specialize in and have experience tutoring Math, English and Spanish (see more in the "Tutoring Subjects" section). Most of all, I enjoy seeing my students succeed and aim to create a positive learning experience.
I have a large breadth of teaching experience, which I believe distinguishes me from other chess instructors. As a debate coach for the Berkeley Carroll School for five years, I worked with high school students one-on-one during national-level tournaments, as well as in the classroom. I also have experience tutoring elementary school students on their reading and writing, and teaching English to Spanish-speaking adults in Manizales, Colombia. I have taught at educational summer camps in Texas and California. I base my teaching style on making our sessions relaxed and fun. At the same time, I design each of my lessons with the goal of imparting concrete, measurable skills.
I am a United States Chess Federation certified tournament player, with a rating of 1428. I have competed at the Marshall Chess Club in Manhattan, and was the captain of my high school's chess team. I excel at opening, middle, and end-game study, and during my lessons I use a mix of students' games, chess puzzles, online videos and computer analysis to keep students engaged.
