I am a English Language Arts major from Hunter College and over 50 credits in Education. I have passed all the scholastic tests for the board of education(LAST, ATSW, CST) to teach children grades 1-6 in New York Public Schools. I student taught before I graduated college in New York City public schools Grades 1-6, and included Special Education Class in my last semester. In the last few years I have been working at Berlitz International School as an ESL/Russian Instructor, and I have been teaching all ages 4 though adults.I have been tutoring for the past 3 years.
I have private students who are in middle school and high school and I tutor them in all subjects and help them improve their study and motivational skills. I helped my high school students prepare for Regents and SAT's. I tutor basic Spanish, English, Math, History, Science, Test Prep, and Reading Comprehension.
When I first start to work with a student I like to assess what kind of learner they are whether they are visual or auditory and then base my teaching style on that. Many of my high school students just need someone to focus and motivate them to do their school work.
My special education students most of the time just need someone to sit with them and walk them through their work while building their confidence. I find that with some students a stumbling block is anxiety and I use coaching and psychological techniques to overcome that. I have worked with ADD students and a large factor of their success depends on making them feel good and accomplished in their work, focusing them on the task at hand and making them feel a sense of accomplishment when they complete a task. I have worked with a Down Syndrome student as well and he is in 4th grade. I provided him with help in all subjects.
I have learned so much from my students and helping others is what I find the most rewarding part of this work. I believe the student's success is the teacher's success.
