I have recently returned from Kabul where I taught Academic English to young Afghans at the American University of Afghanistan for four years. Since the language studies program was designed to prepare students for an all-English curriculum, a special emphasis was placed on reading comprehension as well as essay writing skills. I also conducted a very popular Writers' Workshop to further develop students' ability to identify various academic essay styles, organize and outline material, and structure paragraphs that build upon the essay topic. In addition, I have taught classroom skills such as effective listening and note taking, essential for success in any high school and college program.
I received TESOL certification from U-C Berkeley Extension in 2007 and have taught ESL in both San Francisco and in the Oakland Unified School District. I am a former advertising copywriter and have turned to teaching in my retirement years. I am especially effective in working with young adults, from junior high through college prep.
