I am an award-winning writer (my book of nonfiction is a critically acclaimed, NY TIMES reviewed collection of essays). I have worked as a teacher/editor/freelance writer for more than thirty years. I taught English as a Foreign Language abroad, have taught adult literacy, tutored students with learning disabilities, worked with undergraduate and graduate students, and coached many writers (young and older) in the art of the personal essay.
I am eager to explore with students the many possibilities that exist in a given piece of writing. My goal is to teach students the elements of style and the fundamentals of craft. I provide prompts, ask questions, and work with students to develop their voices, discover what they are really writing about, and hone their editorial skills. My goal is to promote self-sufficiency so that my services become obsolete.
Whenever I teach, I find myself quoting these words from Helene Cixous: "Writing and reading are not separate ... a real reader is already on the way to writing." My focus is on creative literacy, an approach that stresses the practice of rigorous reading, looking at a text from the inside out and inspecting the how of a piece of writing instead of the why. Such examination leads students to hone their proficiency and experiences as readers/writers and to scrutinize the larger context in which writing--their own and that of others--is produced.
